Up for sale, a 1988 Ibanez JP20 in near-mint condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. Introduced in 1982 and designed in collaboration with jazz icon Joe Pass, the JP20 is a versatile jazzbox featuring a hollow maple body with an arched spruce top, a 22-fret ebony fingerboard, and a Super 58 humbucker. Modeled off a D’Aquisto 16” archtop owned by Pass, the JP20’s longer 25 1/2“ scale, wider nut, and 22-fret fingerboard were specifically designed to accommodate his fingerstyle technique, resulting in a slightly more centrally-located pickup position and a taut, punchy sound.
Crafted at the Terada factory in Japan, the fully hollow body is very resonant, with the immediacy and glassy note detail of maple and ebony as tonewoods. The Super 58 humbucker has a PAF-style wind, yielding smooth, spongy lows, woody treble cut and sweetness, and a scooped midrage. The pickup delivers complex harmonics and has a touch of extra treble-centric presence, as the pickup’s position is closer to the bridge than most comparable jazzboxes. Weighing 6lbs 13oz, this JP20 has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 11-49 flatwound strings, easy-playing action, and accurate intonation.
Neck Specs:
-Wood: Maple (three-piece)
-Shape: Slender D, measuring .795” 1st fret, .865” 9th fret
-Fretboard: Ebony, abalone/pearloid split-block inlay
-Frets: Slender, no wear
-Scale Length: 25 ½”
-Nut: 1 3/4”, bone
-Tuners: VelveTune 1349
-Serialization: J8-prefix (Terada, 1988)
Body Specs:
-Wood: Spruce, maple
-Pickups: Super 58 humbucker
-Controls: Volume, Tone
-Hardware: JP Special ebony bridge and tailpiece
-Plastics: Bound tortoise pickguard, Sure Grip II knobs
The gloss Brown Sunburst finish is framed by multi-ply binding which has ambered and checked, stabilized yet still showing a few small chips. Cosmetic wear is otherwise limited to a bit of light wear along the pick path, with just a few faint scratches in the clear coat on the body as a whole. The gloss on the neck profile is flawless.
The original hardshell case is included and plastered with stickers.
