Up for sale, a 1972 Laney Klipp tube amp head in excellent condition and in perfect working order. Built in the UK, this classic ‘70s tube powerhouse is best known for its association with Tony Iommi, who used one extensively on Sabbath’s Master of Reality. Featuring a dual-channel, dual-input design, this amplifier delivers 100W of pure, unbridled power, particularly hair-raising via the infamous Klipp channel.
As one would expect from a Sabbath-approved amp, this Klipp offers a full 100 watts of British muscle via a quad of 6L6 power tubes, with sweet and dynamic cleans through the Normal channel, pushing into hot Marshall-esque sizzle and creamy tube breakup around 6 on the dial. The Klipp channel yields the aggression and dark, moody distortion this amp is best associated with, surprisingly well-suited for bass as well as guitar with potent, churning lows, downright sinister snarl, and plenty of treble aggression. The Klipp knob dictates the unique fuzz-like distortion circuit at the heart of its eponymous channel. Both Channels have Top Boost switches, juicing the signal when engaged for raw, wiry tones.
The turret board circuit is largely original and serviced as needed for optimal performance. The power supply has been fully recapped, with a few new Sozo caps in the preamp, and the original Mullard “mustard” caps have visible date codes from the third quarter of 1972. The pots are all original save for one replacement made by Alpha, and the original Partridge-made power transformer and choke are present, with a replacement output transformer made by Electric Windings, Inc. The back panel has a three-way rotary ohm selector (4, 8, 16) and a rotary voltage selector (115v, 220v, 240v). The tube complement comprises a matched quartet of JJ EL34 power tubes, with four 12AX7s in the preamp.
The enclosure features original black tolex, salt and pepper grillcloth, a Laney badge, machined knobs, and the original handle.
