Up for sale, a 1962 Gibson Les Paul SG Standard, complete with the original hardshell case. Ostensibly an employee-made guitar from Gibson’s Kalamazoo, MI factory, this Les Paul SG has two notable and unusual features, namely an SSN stamped into the mahogany in lieu of a traditional serial number, and factory-installed Grover Pat. Pending Rotomatic tuners (instead of Klusons).
Weighing 7lbs 5oz and balancing well on a strap, this SG features Honduran mahogany body and neck construction with a bound Brazilian rosewood fingerboard, yielding a very lively, woody natural acoustic response. The original pair of Patent Sticker pickups are the direct descendants of the PAF, with untouched solder and original windings on both humbuckers. Extremely responsive to picking dynamics, there’s an upper midrange articulation and smooth growl in the bridge position, offering just enough cut and aggression without being overtly hot. The neck pickup has a bouncy, bell-like sweetness, harmonically dense, with the spongy quality attributable to the Alnico II magnets. This Les Paul SG has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.

The electronics are 100% original, save for a replacement Switchcraft input jack, and original hardware includes the “shaved” base nickel-plated ABR-1 bridge with proper foundry stamp on the baseplate, fitted with new saddles and complete with original domed thumbwheels. The Sideways Vibrola is original as well, and another unique element of this employee-built Gibson. Originally gold-plated, this Vibrola has been stripped of its factory gold plating, with the same SSN as present on the headstock written beneath the Vibrola cover. Similarly, a custom aluminum control cavity cover has been fashioned, also with the matching SSN on the underside.
Plastics include the original quartet of reflector cap knobs, the switch surround, switch tip, neck tenon cover, and one pickup ring (second partially intact M-69 pickup ring is present in the case), while the wide-bevel four-ply pickguard is a modern reproduction.
A few modifications have been restored to vintage spec here at Guitar Bar, including the removal of two mini toggles between the knobs, reinstalling ABR-1 bridge posts where larger inserts had been routed, and most importantly, matching and aging a patch of mahogany between the pickups where a third aftermarket pickup was added. The mini toggles, bridge thimbles and middle pickup route have all been cleanly patched with similarly grained mahogany, and Riggio Custom Guitars matched the finish fade and pickguard “tan line” where the new mahogany was added.
The guitar exhibits a repaired split wrapping the body edge from the neck pickup Tone pot to the rear control cavity cover, and there is also a very shallow V-shaped headstock repair that favors the bass side of the headstock. The original Cherry nitro lacquer gloss shows plenty of nicks, scuffs and edge wear on the contoured mahogany body, with tight lacquer checking and a richer shade of red retained beneath the pickguard and also central to the back. The neck profile is exceedingly comfortable, largely worn to the bare mahogany.
The original hardshell case with black pebble textured covering and gold plush interior is included. Three of the latches are functional and the handle is intact (taped over). The original pickguard is also included (cut for middle pickup).
