Up for sale, a 2020 Sundragon Standard in near mint, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original branded footswitch and padded cover. This 1x12 tube combo is a no-corners-cut exacting replica of the Valco-made (and subsequently modded) Supro Coronado amp used by Jimmy Page to record Led Zeppelin 1; the only amp he used on the record. Hand-wired by amp guru Mitch Colby, designed in tandem with Perry Margouleff and Jimmy Page himself, the Sundragon's faithful sonic signature is in part due to hands-on access to Page's original amp.
Initially only 50 total Sundragon amps were released, all of which sold out near-instantly; so popular demand has led the folks at Sundragon to issue this Standard model for those who missed out on the first release.
Page’s original Supro was almost lost long before LZ1; it fell out of a van while he was touring with Neil Christian. However, Page had a real affinity for the amp, deciding to have it repaired and modded instead of moving on. When the amp returned to Page, the modded circuit had a number of changes and unique quirks. Perhaps the most notable change was the output, which had dramatically decreased.
“When the amp was stock,” says Colby, “it was probably putting out something like 20 watts clean and maybe 25-28 watts overdriven. After Jimmy got it back, it was only putting out 8 watts clean and maybe 20 watts flat out. That’s the same in the Sundragon.”
The benefit of that relatively low output can be clearly heard in the tone produced: the Sundragon has very little headroom, easily cascading into harmonically-rich overdrive. Because the Volume control is limited in terms of output dB, cranking the knob will have a much greater impact on compression and gain than overall volume (after a point). The tone is warm and fat, with the overall darkness of the circuit balanced by the brightness of the 12” Jensen speaker. When played with a Tele bridge pickup and cranked, this amp is truly a remarkable facsimile for the legendary tones Page laid down on Led Zeppelin 1 and other albums like Joe Cocker’s With a Little Help from My Friends.
The Sundragon features a two-channel design with two inputs per channel (Treble and Regular). Controls couldn't be simpler, with dedicated Volume knobs for each channel, a master Tone, and smaller Intensity and Speed knobs to govern the Tremolo effect which is exclusive to Channel 2. The Tremolo controls have inverted functionality just as they were on the original Supro, and the external footswitch for engaging the Tremolo is included.
The Sundragon uses original specification power and output transformers built at special request by the same manufacturer who built the originals almost seven decades ago. The overall layout is the same (with the preamp mounted to the top of the enclosure, and the power supply at the bottom), and the unique circuit is point-to-point hand-wired on '50s-style terminal strips. The Jensen P12Q alnico magnet 12" speaker has had its cone worked-in prior to installation to ensure a smoother response. The tube complement comprises a matched pair of TAD 6L6 power tubes, a trio of Ruby 12AX7 preamp tubes, and a JJ GZ34 rectifier.
The two-tone cosmetics on the enclosure are practically perfect, the faceplate is pristine, and the Sundragon badge is like-new. Both the original padded cover and footswitch are included.
