A rare and purportedly discontinued boutique tube amp, the Midnight Special III is designed to preserve the original tonal qualities of an instrument at any volume level. Chris Siegmund hand-wired the original single-ended Midnight Special to deliver the rich tube tones of a vintage, high-powered amp in a compact unit that can be played at bedroom levels. This modern, enhanced A/AB version of Siegmund’s much-lauded design furthers the quality and versatility of the amp, offering a bevy of rich tones.Tonally, this amp is warm and full-sounding, with ample midrange complexity and singing trebles. When pushed hard, it has a wonderfully creamy breakup, and the tube rectifier provides just the right amount of sag. This Siegmund is very dynamically responsive, remaining articulate and lively at any volume level. Controls include Volume, stacked Reverb/Mix, Voice, Treble, Middle, Bass, and Master Volume knobs. The EQ controls are also very responsive and wide ranging.This Midnight Special III features hand-wired, point-to-point terminal wiring, with premium componentry including custom transformers by Mercury Magnetics and NOS capacitors and resistors. The amp can be toggled between Class A and Class AB functionality, and the onboard tube-driven, transformer-less spring reverb is footswitchable. The tube complement includes a pair of Gold Lion KT66 tubes, with a JJ GZ34 rectifier and a preamp section loaded with vintage valves from the likes of Sylvania and Raytheon.The cabinet sports clean black tolex with a premium leather handle, hammered gold enamel control plate, and wheat grillcloth. This amp is in fantastic shape, with pristine graphics on the faceplate, and barely a mark on the amp.
