Up for sale, a Sequential Prophet-6 in near-mint condition and in perfect working order, complete with a padded carry case. Designed by Sequential Circuits founder Dave Smith as a worthy successor to his groundbreaking analog polysynth, the Prophet-5, this 6-voice analog synth is just as dynamic and versatile as that original, much-beloved instrument. According to Smith, “it’s not a reissue, it’s vintage with a modern twist;” with two discrete VCOs plus a sub oscillator per voice. Other features include two discrete filters per voice; a studio-grade, digital dual effects section; onboard arpeggiator and step sequencer; a knob-per-function top panel; and a full-size, 4-octave, semi-weighted keyboard with velocity and aftertouch.
Central to the warm, punchy sound of the Prophet-6 are its two newly-designed, discrete voltage-controlled oscillators (plus sub-oscillator) per voice. Continuously variable waveshapes provide the tonal palette with triangle, sawtooth, and variable-width pulse waves. There are two discrete filters per voice—a four-pole, resonant, low-pass inspired by the original Prophet-5 filter, and a two-pole, resonant, high-pass filter. Voltage-controlled amplifiers complete the all-analog signal path.
The dual effects section delivers studio-quality reverbs, delays (both standard and bucket brigade-style), chorus, and phase shifter. The effects are digital, with 24-bit/48kHz resolution, but true bypass maintains the pure-analog signal path. There’s also a 100% analog, entirely independent stereo distortion effect. One of the most revolutionary features of the Prophet-5 was the Poly Mod (Polyphonic Modulation) signal routing; that feature is present here, too, with some modern enhancements to boot. As with its predecessor, the Prophet-6’s modulation sources are the Filter Envelope and Oscillator 2 (both with bi-polar control), and destinations include Oscillator 1 frequency, Oscillator 1 shape, Oscillator 1 pulse width, lowpass filter cutoff, and highpass filter cutoff. Unison mode (featuring configurable voice count of 1-6 voices and key modes) is also present.
The Prophet-6’s polyphonic step sequencer accommodates up to 64 steps and up to six notes per step, letting you build sequences polyphonically, with rests and external MIDI clock sync. There’s also a full-function arpeggiator, which can also be synced to external MIDI clock. The knob-per-function top panel makes the Prophet-6 exceptionally easy to program, with near-instant access to all of its functions. There are 500 permanent factory programs, arranged in 10 banks of 100 programs each (with the ability to create and save up to 500 user programs). Toggling the Preset button also accesses the Prophet-6's Live Panel mode, where the sound reverts to the current settings of the controls, making this synth notably gig-friendly.
This Prophet-6 is in fantastic shape, sparingly played with pristine graphics. There's barely a mark on the control panel, and the wooden framework is also notably clean, with only a couple small scuffs and exceedingly faint edge wear.
A Roadrunner-brand padded carry case is included.
