Up for sale, a 1968 Gibson SG Melody Maker in exceptional, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. Finished in gloss Walnut nitro lacquer, this two pickup iteration of the Melody Maker platform features the distinctive SG body shape introduced in the mid-60s. The pair of robust-sounding single coil pickups combine a Fender-esque snap and twang with the fuller midrange and low end punch that mahogany provides. The Melody Maker has a raw, bell-like sound and tonal profile all its own, and the single coils have plenty of detail and cut. This guitar is very easy on the back too, weighing 7lbs 3oz. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, the SG Melody Maker offers easy playability, freshly restrung with 11-49 roundwound strings.
The one-piece mahogany neck has a slender C profile carve at the nut yet with substantial heft and particularly round shoulders as you travel up the fretboard, measuring .810" deep at the 1st fret and 1.015" at the 12th. On the rosewood fretboard, the original medium jumbo frets are intact, showing light uniform wear on the crowns of frets 1-2, extending more faintly beneath the plain strings until fret 7. The guitar plays easily in every register up the straight neck with a responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The original nut measures 1 9/16" in width. The headstock sports the Melody Maker's signature slender "open book" shape, with original Kluson Deluxe double line tuners that turn smoothly and hold pitch well with original white buttons.
On the body, the electronics function as intended with untouched solder joints on the original wiring harness, CTS pots that date to '68, and ceramic disc tone caps. The original pickguard, pickup covers, switch tip, pair of strap buttons, and quartet of nigh flawless black witch hat knobs are intact. The bridge can double as a wraparound if bypassing the vibrato is desired, yet the bridge has ideal height on both thumbwheels, providing good break angle for the short frame Lyre Vibrola tailpiece. The Vibrola has a smooth, quick response with gleaming chrome plating on the bridge and tailpiece.
The Walnut gloss nitro lacquer finish is 100% original with no touchup or overspray, and the finish is dark and saturated. Cosmetic wear is limited to pick scuffing across the treble side of the guard, some scattered minor nicks on the body parameter, and a few faint finish scratches and minor marks on the back as well. The guitar exhibits zero buckle rash and the nitro lacquer still has a distinctive gloss sheen. The neck profile retains its smooth nitro lacquer gloss as well, free of palm wear with only a few ancillary nicks not distracting to the palm while fretting.
A modern Roadrunner hardshell case with a zippered vinyl exterior is included.
