Up for sale, a 1966 Fender Jazzmaster in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case and hangtag. One of the very first Jazzmasters to feature the cosmetic combination of a bound rosewood fingerboard and pearloid block inlays, this Jazzmaster is 100% original save for a professional refret, hand-carved bone nut, and modern Kluson-style tuning machines.
The original gray bobbin pickups deliver equal parts dynamic treble detail and smooth warmth, with the clarity and cut of your favorite Fender single coil, yet providing a tonal breadth that's unique to the Jazzmaster pickup design, with the original pickup windings extending all the way to the very edge of the bobbins. The bridge pickup is snappy and sparkling with plenty of sinewy cut, while the neck pickup is inherently rounder-sounding while still having ideal clarity and a sweet percussive character. Engaging the Rhythm Circuit on the lower body horn thickens things up for even richer, woolier sounds. This alder-bodied Fender balances well on a strap and weighs 8lbs. Professionally setup and dialed in to perfection here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar (where we specialize in Offset Fender guitars), this Jazzmaster features fresh 10-46 roundwound strings, low action, and accurate intonation.
The one-piece maple neck has an inviting and round medium C profile carve with moderate shoulder, measuring .835" deep at the 1st fret and .915" at the 12th. Much of the nitro gloss has been brought down to the smooth bare maple on the neck profile from natural palm wear, particularly on the treble side shoulder of the neck carve. The dark rosewood fretboard is framed by cream binding with pearloid block inlay, refretted with fretwire that has the same slender width as vintage wire, yet with appreciably more height and crown, ensuring effortless bending and long fret life. The frets are flawless save for just a touch of wear beneath the G and B strings on frets 1-3. The fretboard retains its original 7 1/4" radius, and a new hand-carved bone nut measures 1 5/8" in width. On the headstock, the guitar features a modern set of Kluson-style tuning machines that turn very smoothly and hold pitch well. The September, 1966 date stamp is clean and bold on the neck heel, and the original "paint stick" markings for the finish are visible in the neck pocket.
On the body, all of the electronics work as they should, with untouched solder joints and Stackpole pots which date to the 10th week of '66. The gray bobbin pickups have their original bright copper windings, cloth covered leads, and covers, each with an original '66 date inked on the bobbin. All of the brass shielding tubs are intact, and the original routes are unaltered. The original hardware is all present, and the chrome plating is positively gleaming on the bridge and vibrato tailpiece. The vibrato works exceptionally well and responds to the lightest touch for quick flutters, surfy warbles and deep dives, jumping back to the original pitch with ease and complete with the original arm. The original tortoise pickguard has the dark red "meatball" nitrate material first seen in '66, showing minimal shrinkage with the original aluminum shielding plate intact.
The Sunburst nitro lacquer gloss is 100% original with no touchup or overspray, and the burst is particularly bold and rich. Exceptionally well-kept, cosmetic wear includes three small screw holes (two adjacent to the bridge and a third just beyond the input jack on the lower bout), presumably for mounting a MIDI pickup of some sort. Wear is otherwise limited to some scuffing on the treble side lower bout on top between the pickguard and vibrato, a few minor dings and finish chips on the body parameter, and some ancillary minor marks and faint buckle wear on the back as well.
The original black tolex hardshell case is included with notably clean black leather ends, the original small Fender logo, functional latches and the original handle. The original hangtag is also included.
