Up for sale, a 1966 Fender Jazzmaster in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. A custom color example finished in its original Olympic White nitro lacquer gloss with matching peghead, this Jazzmaster is 100% original save for a professional refret and hand-carved bone nut.
The original gray bobbin pickups deliver equal parts dynamic treble detail and smooth warmth, with the clarity and cut of your favorite Fender single coil, yet providing a tonal breadth that's unique to the Jazzmaster pickup design, with the original pickup windings extending all the way to the very edge of the bobbins. Whether you desire the sinewy snap and sparkle of early surf recordings or the aggressive note attack of your favorite Elvis Costello or Sonic Youth records, it's hard to beat a genuine vintage Jazzmaster. This alder-bodied Fender balances well on a strap and weighs 8lbs 2oz. Professionally setup and dialed in to perfection here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar (where we specialize in Offset Fender guitars), this Jazzmaster features fresh 10-46 roundwound strings, low action, and accurate intonation.
The one-piece maple neck has a unique profile carve only seen on Fenders from 1965-66, offering a particularly chunky and round C shape at the nut, actually growing a hair more slender as you travel up the fretboard, measuring .899" deep at the 1st fret and .875" at the 12th. There is light natural wear through the majority of the gloss on the profile length, silky smooth to the palm with no additional wear. The Brazilian rosewood fretboard is framed by cream binding with pearloid dot inlay, refretted with medium jumbo fretwire that shows no wear, playing cleanly in every register up the straight neck. The fretboard has a 7 1/4" radius, and a new hand-carved bone nut measures 1 5/8" in width. On the headstock, the original Kluson Deluxe double line tuning machines are intact and turn smoothly with clean plating, one of the last Jazzmasters to feature these more highly revered tuners before the "F" tuners were introduced later in the model year. The matching Olympic White peghead also features the original "block" Jazzmaster logo. The February, 1966 date stamp is clean and bold on the neck heel, and the original "paint stick" markings for the custom color finish are visible in the neck pocket.
On the body, all of the electronics work as they should, with untouched solder joints and Stackpole pots which date to the 45th week of '65. The gray bobbin pickups have their original bright copper windings, cloth leads, and covers. The bridge pickup bobbin is pencil dated 3-31-66. All of the brass shielding tubs are intact, and the original routes are unaltered. The original hardware is all present, exhibiting patina on the bridge saddles and to a lesser extent on the bridge base which still has gleaming chrome plating, matching the vibrato tailpiece. The vibrato works exceptionally well and responds to the lightest touch for quick flutters, surfy warbles and deep dives, jumping back to the original pitch with ease and complete with the original arm. The original tortoise pickguard is one of the last nitrate guards to retain the same Pre-CBS era material with broader yellow swirls (the "meatball" red tort would become the norm by the following year). The guard does show some of the usual shrinkage, with a sliver of the aluminum pickguard shield visible around part of the guard parameter, yet all screw holes still line up well and the pickups are adjustable without being impeded by the guard.
The Olympic White nitro lacquer gloss is 100% original with no touchup or overspray, exhibiting very light, graceful aging of the clear coat and a touch of natural forearm wear through the clear where the forearm crosses the top. Cosmetic wear is otherwise limited to vertical lacquer checking, mostly relegated to the back, some finish chipping along the edge of the belly contour and some small dings and scuffs primarily on the body parameter.
The original black tolex hardshell case is included, retaining its original trio of latches, functional handle (taped over) and clean black leather ends, with small Fender logo on the exterior.
