Up for sale, a 1980 Greco Speedway GOBII-650 in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. Made concurrently with the Ibanez Musician basses at Japan's famed Fujigen factory, this Greco is an impressive instrument with a full 34" scale and set neck construction. The neck is crafted from three pieces of maple, capped with a thick rosewood slab 24 fret fingerboard, paired with a dark Sunburst-finished ash body. The bass has a healthy natural sustain with one fat-sounding centrally-located pickup, clear and rich without being overwound despite its size. It’s a very vintage-flavored sound with good muscle, aided by the tonewood compliment, set neck design and heavy-duty bridge. Weighing 8lbs 15oz and professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this Greco is strung with 45-100 roundwound strings, dialed in with low action and spot-on intonation.
The neck has a modestly slender C shape at the nut, growing just a hair deeper and rounder in the higher registers, capped with a thick slab rosewood fretboard. The original medium jumbo frets retain their full factory height with plenty of meat, showing light wear, primarily beneath the A and D strings on frets 1-6, and virtually no wear further up the fretboard. The neck is straight and the bass plays easily up the 24 fret range with heel-less construction. The nut measures 1 5/8" in width, carved from bone to ensure optimal note clarity and sustain. The headstock retains the original Greco-branded truss rod cover and stock low profile clover button tuning machines that turn smoothly and are nice and lightweight, ensuring the instrument is balanced on a strap.
The electronics work exactly as intended and are 100% stock, with Master Volume and Tone controls and original gold speed knobs. The heavy-duty top-loader bridge has individual saddles for optimal intonation, with uniform patina across the nickel plating. Cosmetic wear on the dark gloss Sunburst finish is limited to pick scuffing across the strum path, scattered minor dings on the body parameter, and light scuffing on the back lower bout body edge. The neck profile has a smooth gloss finish as well, with just a few minor marks on the profile length.
