Up for sale, a 1970 Gibson Dove in collector-grade condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case and hangtag. Crack-free and 100% original save for a carved bone nut, this is a stunningly well-kept vintage Gibson. A short lived iteration of the Dove offered after the ABR-1 bridge design was retired for this model, this Dove features a solid carved ebony bridge with a height-adjustable ebony saddle.
The guitar has a punchy, bright square shoulder dreadnought tone, with the immediate note attack of maple and the power of the X-braced construction and longer 25 1/2" scale. A stunner both visually and sonically, the Dove is a bold sounding and extremely rewarding guitar for strumming chords, with a rich rumble in the low end. We've had this Gibson professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with fresh 12-53 strings and comfortable action.
The three-piece neck has a medium C profile carve at the nut with ample shoulder and heft further up the fretboard, measuring .830" deep at the 1st fret and .955" at the 9th. The bound rosewood fretboard is a particularly dark cut of this tonewood, featuring pearl split parallelogram inlays and retaining the original medium jumbo frets which have their full factory height and plenty of meat and crown. There's only light wear beneath the B string on frets 1-5, and the guitar plays easily in every register with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The scale length is a full 25 1/2", a feature that adds tension to the top and increases the treble response and sheer volume of the guitar, compared to Gibson's more common 24 3/4" scale. The carved bone nut measures 1 11/16" in width, and the headstock features one of the earliest examples of Gibson's Schaller-made tuning machines which offer extremely smooth and reliable performance. The "Made in USA" text is present below the six digit serial, and the headstock has no volute.
The original ebony bridge sits flush with the top, inlaid with pearl doves on the feet, fitted with the original height-adjustable ebony saddle. The original pickguard is nigh flawless, showing zero off-gassing with bold graphics. The saturated Cherry Sunburst nitro lacquer finish is framed by multi-ply top and back binding, 100% original with no touchup or overspray. There is light broad lacquer checking on the body, a few pick marks north of the soundhole, and a few minor dings and scuffs on the body as a whole. The gloss nitro lacquer on the profile is silky smooth and free of palm wear.
The original black tolex hardshell case with gold interior is included, along with the original hangtag.
