Up for sale, a 1959 Fender Precision Bass in excellent condition and in perfect working order. Produced in Fender's golden era at the pinnacle of Pre-CBS production, the features of this bass exist in a very narrow window, retaining the anodized gold pickguard used in the first half of '59, while boasting the slab rosewood fingerboard introduced midway through the '59 model year. The bass features a Fiesta Red nitro lacquer refinish over the original Sunburst, retaining the original hardware and electronics.
Arguably the blueprint for iconic tone and visual appeal on any bass, this Precision Bass is a lively alder-bodied example, well-balanced on a strap and weighing 8lbs 10oz. Strung with 45-105 roundwound strings and featuring the original black bobbin pickup with stock windings, this bass delivers a broad, detailed thump and great top end articulation. There's just enough pillowy push without being unnecessarily punchy, and since the strings are primarily resonating over an incredibly dark and tight-grained piece of Brazilian rosewood, the tone of the bass faithfully reproduces the clarity, warmth, and detail of this hallowed tonewood. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this Precision Bass is dialed in with comfortable action and spot-on intonation.
The maple neck has a very slender C profile carve, emblematic of the very fast-feeling necks offered by Fender from 1958-59. The profile has slight shoulders and lightly rolled fretboard edges, with more roundness and heft as you travel up the fretboard, measuring .765" deep at the 1st fret, graduating to .965" at the 12th. On the thick slab Brazilian rosewood fretboard, the original slender frets are intact and in excellent shape, showing only light wear beneath the D string on frets 1-9. The nut measures a full 1 3/4" in width. The headstock retains the original reverse tuning machines with clover buttons, and all gears turn smoothly and hold pitch very well, with only light surface patina. The neck was professionally refinished in nitro lacquer by Riggio Custom Guitars, with the gloss brought down to a smooth satin on the majority of the carve as part of Riggio’s subtle relic profess, with a high gloss ambered finish on the heel and headstock. A vintage-correct waterslide "Precision Bass" decal has also been installed, and the neck heel is date-less, consistent with 1959 production.
This bass does exhibit a W-shaped repaired split along the bass-side half of the headstock joint, perfectly smooth to the touch, extending very faintly to the headstock face and ending at the A tuner post. This has been professionally addressed and is structurally stable, holding full string tension with ease.
The electronics include the original black bobbin pickup with stock windings and original CTS pots that date to the 47th week of 1959. The control control cavity route is the more squared off "elbow" iteration associated with 1958, and the original 3/59 grease pencil date on the body is intact beneath the pickup shielding plate, with the original Sunburst nitro visible both in the pickup route and neck pocket. The gold anodized pickguard is original, along with all of the hardware which includes the four saddle bridge, knurled metal knobs, black plastic finger rest, and original "ashtray" cover for the pickup (the bridge cover is a modern Fender Pure Vintage component).
The body has been professionally refinished in Fiesta Red nitro lacquer, shot over the original Sunburst with a white primer coat. There are various nicks and finish scuffs across the body, with forearm wear on the lower bout body edge, and one ding on the tip of the treble-side body horn. The neck profile is extremely smooth and free of wear, with light curly flame figuring extending the length of the profile.
An older Fender reissue tweed hardshell case is included.
