Up for sale, a 1998 Gibson SG-Z finished in Verdigris Teal Metallic and complete with the original hardshell case. A rare SG variant only produced for two short years, the SG-Z is utterly unique in its approach. The guitar features string through body construction, a 24 fret ebony fingerboard to compliment the solid mahogany body/neck, a simplified control layout, humbucker/single coil pickup pairing, and a distinctive gray pearloid pickguard and matching truss rod cover.
The pickup pairing includes a Gibson 500T bridge position humbucker, and a 490R hum-cancelling stacked single coil, yielding a particularly broad sonic range. The wooly warmth of the mahogany body and glassy snap of the ebony fingerboard translate well through the aggressive, cutting voice of the ceramic magnet 500T, while the neck position coil is smooth and sparkling in its response, and surprisingly well-balanced with the bridge pickup too. Featherweight at 6lbs 10oz, we've had this SG professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and spot-on intonation.
The neck has a particularly slender and fast-feeling C profile carve, measuring .770" deep at the 1st fret and .860" at the 12th. The bound ebony fretboard features split diamond pearl inlays and a full 24 fret range with a full 25 1/2" scale length and 1 11/16" nut width. The original slender frets play cleanly in every register, the neck is straight, and the truss rod is responsive and optimally adjusted. The headstock features original black Grover Rotomatic tuning machines which turn smoothly and hold pitch well.
The headstock did experience a V-shaped fracture in the past, cleanly repaired and very smooth. The conventional wisdom is that the repair is stronger than the wood was originally, and the guitar holds full string tension with ease.
The body features the stock electronics, governed by a three-way pickup selector toggle and Master Volume and Tone knobs, and the guitar also features a rather unique recessed side-mounted input jack. The hardware includes the distinctive lightning bolt tailpiece for the string through body, along with a matching black Nashville bridge. The original reflector cap knob pair is intact (sans caps), and the original gray pearloid pickguard matches the truss rod cover. The Verdigris Teal Metallic gloss nitro lacquer finish is akin to a greened out Pelham Blue, with more prominent greening of the clear coat on the back of the instrument. Cosmetic wear is limited to a very faint speckling of wear in the clear coat of the gloss on top, and some minor scuffs and nicks on the back and lower bout body edge. There is also pick scuffing across the guard and checking at the binding nibs. The nitro gloss on the neck profile is smooth and free of wear.
The original brown tolex Gibson USA hardshell case with pink plush interior is included.
