Up for sale, a 1966 Fender Mustang in excellent condition and in perfect working order. 100% original save for a replacement vibrato arm, this Mustang retains its original Daphne Blue nitro lacquer finish and is featherweight at 7lbs 2oz. This vintage Mustang has a clear, smooth acoustic voice that translates well through the stock gray bobbin pickups with great jangle and clarity. Since the pickups are essentially flat pole Stratocaster pickups with covers over the magnets, the tones are surprisingly similar, although the Mustang has the added benefit of a pair of three-way on/off/on pickup switches for a very cool out-of-phase hollow twang and quack when the switches are engaged in their innermost or outermost positions. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with a fresh set of 11-48 roundwound strings and low action, this Mustang is a lively and vital-sounding vintage Fender.
The maple neck has a round, chunky C profile carve with particularly full shoulders and a substantial, easy-playing feel, measuring .860" deep at the 1st fret and .915" at the 12th. The guitar has the full 24" Mustang scale, 1 5/8" nut width, and 7 1/4" fretboard radius. The stock fretwire is intact on the extremely dark, tight-grained Brazilian rosewood board, and the frets show light wear, primarily beneath the plain strings on frets 1-2, extending more faintly beneath the plains until fret 8. The guitar plays cleanly in every register, the neck is straight, and the truss rod is responsive and optimally adjusted. On the headstock, the Mustang decal is intact on the face, and the original Fender F tuners work smoothly and hold pitch well with clean white buttons. The neck heel retains a January, 1966 date stamp, along with the "paint stick" markings in the neck pocket indicative of an original finish.
The electronics all function as intended, and everything is original right down to the last screw. The solder joints are untouched, with CTS pots that date to the 7th week of '66 and the original gray bobbin pickup pair. The original hardware is all present including the early F-embossed four-bolt neck plate, bridge with barrel saddles, and Pat. Pending vibrato unit. This vibrato has excellent tension and actuates with a light touch, jumping back to the original pitch with ease. The original plastic parts are notably clean, including the stock knob pair and white pearloid pickguard which is extremely well preserved, virtually unaged with great dimension in the pearloid material.
The Daphne Blue gloss nitro lacquer finish is 100% original with no touchup or overspray, showing notable greening of the clear coat. There are various finish chips and nicks, mostly clustered on the body parameter, along with buckle rash central to the back and a few additional minor marks on the body as a whole.
A brand new Fender G&G black tolex hardshell case is included.
