Up for sale, a 1966 Gibson J-50ADJ in exceptional, 100% original condition, complete with the original hangtag. Structurally identical to a J-45 and marketed by Gibson as an upgrade from that venerable dreadnought with a Natural-finished X-braced spruce top, this particular J-50 is a notably well cared for and crack-free model, benefitting from a fresh neck reset ensuring optimal playability for decades to come.
With the tonewood pairing of solid mahogany back and sides and a solid spruce top, this guitar delivers a big punchy sound with incredible warmth and power, authoritative in its note attack yet also relaxed and broad in its delivery. This instrument is a very rewarding strummer with a snappy, bright treble register and taut restrained bass that doesn’t overshadow the plain strings. The guitar offers great definition and a certain bell-like, sweet upper midrange that cuts through a mix and records very well. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this J-50ADJ is strung with fresh 12-53 phosphor bronze strings, dialed in for comfortable action.
The one-piece mahogany neck has a very slender, fast-feeling C profile carve at the nut with appreciable shoulder and increased depth as you travel up the fretboard, measuring .785" deep at the 1st fret and .950" at the 12th. The rosewood slab fretboard is particularly thick with lightly rolled edges for added comfort, retaining the original medium jumbo fretwire which has good meat and shows zero wear. The guitar plays cleanly in every register with a straight neck and responsive, ideally adjusted truss rod. The original nut measures 1 9/16" in width. On the headstock, the original chrome import tuners are intact and still function as intended. An anomaly on certain Gibson models in the latter half of the '60s, the open-gear tuners seen on this J-50 are indeed the stock gears and were imported from Japan.
The original rosewood bridge sits flush with the top on all edges, and the original adjustable saddle has ample height for future adjustment. The nitro lacquer gloss finish is 100% original, with cosmetic wear on the body limited to pick scuffing across the red tortoise pickguard, very light lacquer checking on top behind the bridge and on the sides, some light finish scratches across the back, and a few additional minor marks on the body as a whole. The guitar is crack-free, and the neck profile nitro gloss is flawless.
A modern hardshell case is included, along with the original hangtag, cleanly stamped "J-50ADJ."
