Up for sale, a 1960 Magnatone 260 vintage 2x12 tube amplifier in excellent condition and in perfect working order. Produced in the golden "Magna Electronics Inc." age of Magnatone production, this amp retains its original Oxford speaker pair with a thoroughly-serviced circuit and a full vintage tube set.
This Magnatone features two channels with individual Volume and EQ controls as well as two-way Tone toggles for each channel. Driven by a matched pair of vintage RCA-made 6L6GC power tubes, the amp has a rich, lush sound capable of delivering both articulate cleans and overdriven roar. Of course at the heart of any Magnatone is their varistor-based true pitch shifting vibrato circuit, which is thick and watery, with a Leslie-esque swirl and unequalled dimension. As a top of the line Magnatone amplifier, the 260 has a complex true point-to-point hand-wired circuit which has been recently serviced and recapped to sound its best, balancing originality and functionality.
The circuit features a compliment of modern matching tubular caps in the preamp, which is otherwise extremely original with carbon comp resistors and CTS pots that date to the 37th week of 1960. All of the original Schumacher transformers are intact, and the power and output transformers have matching date codes from the 42nd week of 1960. The Estey-branded RCA-made 6L6GC power tubes are properly biased and have plenty of life left, with an RCA 5U4 rectifier and preamp tube compliment featuring valves from the likes of Amperex and GE. The amp retains its original Oxford 12K5 speaker pair, with original Magnatone stickers on the alnico magnet bells and date codes on the edges of the frames from the 46th week of '60.
The amp has been professionally retolexed in a subtly textured black material (much more resilient than the original brown bindery cloth covering), while the original wheat grillcloth is intact with oxblood sparkle thread and the original Magnatone chevron in the lower right corner of the baffle. The Magnatone gold faceplate is quite well kept, the silkscreened graphics on the chassis are remarkably clean, and the full compliment of original knobs is intact.
