Up for sale, a 1960 Gibson Melody Maker D (Double) in exceptional condition and in perfect working order, 100% original save for a partial refret. A very well-kept example with a particularly vibrant three-tone Sunburst gloss nitro lacquer finish, this Melody Maker D may hail from the 1960 model year yet still retains the very full-feeling C-shaped neck profile carve of a '59 model, capped with a Brazilian rosewood fingerboard and paired with a solid Honduran mahogany body. The pair of robust-sounding single coil pickups combine a Fender-esque snap and twang with the fuller midrange and low end punch that mahogany provides. The Melody Maker has a raw, bell-like sound and tonal profile all its own, and the single coils have plenty of detail and cut. This guitar is very easy on the back too, weighing 6lbs 6oz. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, the Melody Maker features coveted tonewoods and offers easy playability, freshly restrung with 11-49 roundwound strings.
The one-piece Honduran mahogany neck has a big ‘50s-style profile carve with just enough heft in the shoulders and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .870" deep at the 1st fret and 1.015" at the 12th. On the Brazilian rosewood fretboard, the frets are medium in jumbo in width, professionally refretted from frets 1-8, with the original fretwire retained further up the fretboard. The frets have been leveled and crowned showing zero wear and playing effortlessly in every register. The original nylon nut measures 1 11/16" in width. The headstock sports the Melody Maker's signature slender "open book" shape, with original open-gear strip tuners that turn smoothly and hold pitch well with original white buttons. The headstock serial number is also inked as opposed to stamped, a holdover from the 1950s.
On the body, the electronics function as intended with untouched solder joints on the original wiring harness, CentraLab pots that date to the 28th week of '60, and Sprague Black Beauty tone caps. The original pickguard, pickup covers, switch tip, pair of plastic strap buttons, and quartet of gold reflector cap knobs are intact and extremely clean. The strings are anchored to the original lightweight aluminum wraparound tailpiece and both tailpiece inserts have enough height for decades of future adjustment.
The Sunburst gloss nitro lacquer finish is 100% original with no touchup or overspray, and the finish is warm and saturated, with faint lacquer checking across the body. A super tidy example, wear is limited to pick scuffing across the guard, some requisite minor marks and finish scratches mostly relegated to the back and body parameter, and light finish wear across the back bass-side lower bout from extended contact with a strap in the case. There are some minor nicks and very shallow finish chips on the neck profile carve, with palm wear through the nitro gloss along the treble side fretboard edge from frets 2-9.
The original faux alligator chipboard case is included with functional latches, and the original plastic handle still remarkably intact and secured on both ends.
