Up for sale, a 1978 Fender Mustang in excellent condition and in perfect working order, boasting a particularly clean Blonde gloss finish. While many Mustangs have a poplar body, this ash-bodied Mustang has the inherent midrange fullness and punch that comes with this particular tonewood, beefing up the sound of the two vintage grey bobbin single coil pickups in a notable way. There's plenty of snap, snarl, and cut available from these pickups, and each pickup setting has a distinct, rich tone, including an out-of-phase option for the Mustang's signature thinned-out quack. The guitar weighs 7lbs 11oz and has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and spot-on intonation.
The maple neck has a U-shaped profile carve with full shoulders and lightly rolled fretboard edges, filling the palm and measuring .905" deep at the 1st fret and .930" at the 12th. On the rosewood fretboard, the original slender frets are intact, showing moderate wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-3, and fainter wear on the crowns until fret 7. The guitar plays cleanly in every register with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The nut measures 1 5/8" in width, upgraded to a hand-carved piece of bone for optimal note clarity and sustain. The original chrome Fender "F" tuners are intact and turn very smoothly on the headstock, which also has an S8-prefix serial number dating to 1978. All of the original factory stamps are intact on the neck heel and in the pocket too.
The guitar is loaded with a complete 1978 Mustang pickup compliment and wiring harness, with '78 date stamps on both gray bobbin pickups and CTS pots that date to the 21st week of '78. The neck pickup has been professionally rewound, while the bridge pickup retains its original windings. The original vibrato unit, control plate, and bridge with barrel saddles are all present, and the chrome plating is positively gleaming. The vibrato actuates easily for expressive warbles and dives, fitted with a modern vibrato arm.
The ash body has broad, dynamic grain, accented by the original Blonde finish which has great transparency and only a hint of aging in the clear coat of the gloss. Cosmetic wear is limited to finish scratches on the back lower bout, light scuffing in the clear coat of the gloss near the neck plate, and a few additional minor marks on the body as a whole, including one small ding on top adjacent to the control plate. The neck profile has a smooth flawless original gloss finish.
The original black tolex hardshell case is included. The case retains its original trio of functioning latches, the original handle, and small raised Fender logo on the case exterior.
