Up for sale, a 1978 Fender Mustang in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, with the fairly rare cosmetic and tonal combination of a Natural-finished ash body and maple fretboard. While many Mustangs have a poplar body, this ash-bodied Mustang has the inherent midrange fullness and punch that comes with this particular tonewood, beefing up the sound of the two original grey bobbin single coil pickups in a notable way. There's plenty of snap, snarl, and cut available from these pickups, and each pickup setting has a distinct, rich tone, including an out-of-phase option for the Mustang's signature thinned-out quack. The guitar weighs 7lbs 15oz and has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and spot-on intonation.
The maple neck has a U-shaped profile carve with generous shoulder and notable depth, filling the palm and measuring .900" deep at the 1st fret and .975" at the 12th. The maple fretboard is an uncommon option on any Mustang, yielding a glassy note attack and articulate snap, retaining the original slender frets which have their full factory height and show only very light wear on the crowns of frets 1-3, extending beneath the plain strings until fret 6. The nut measures 1 5/8" in width, and on the headstock, the original chrome Fender "F" tuners are intact and turn very smoothly. The inked date stamp on the butt end of the neck is intact, and all the expected factory stamps are present in the neck pocket and on the heel.
Both original grey bobbin pickups have matching stamps on their bobbins, and the original three-way on/off/on pickup selector switches are intact too. The wiring harness is untouched as well, with CTS pots that date to the 26th week of '78. The underside of the pickguard also retains its original serial number sticker, matching the serial on the headstock with an "S8" prefix. The original vibrato unit, control plate, and bridge with barrel saddles are all present, with a bit of scuffing on the chrome plating which still has plenty of shine.
The ash body has broad, dynamic grain, accented by the original ambered Natural gloss finish. There is a light spot of targeted buckle rash just south of the neck plate, a few additional minor scuffs and dings on the back, and a few minor nicks on top adjacent to the control plate and at the bass-side waist. The neck profile retains its smooth gloss, free of palm wear with only one finish chip on the treble side of the carve behind fret 7.
A vintage black tolex hardshell case is included.
