Up for sale a 1988 Gibson Les Paul Standard in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original "chainsaw" case. An uncommonly lightweight and lively example at only 8lbs 14oz, this early modern Standard features a very warm Heritage Cherry Sunburst gloss nitro lacquer finish. This Les Paul has traditional tonewood ingredients including a carved maple cap and solid, non-weight relieved mahogany body, with a certain sustain, punch, and fullness indicative of the early Standard models.
Of course the heart of this Standard is the pair of original Bill Lawrence designed Super Humbuckers, known colloquially as Gibson's "circuit board" pickups. These medium output pickups pair very well with this particular Gibson and handle gain extremely well, delivering an articulate array of tones that can be bright and growly or thick and punchy with the flip of a switch. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this Les Paul Standard is dialed in with 10-46 strings, low action, and solid intonation.
The mahogany neck has a slender, fast-feeling C profile cave, with just a hair more depth and heft in the higher registers, measuring .835" deep at the 1st fret and .975" at the 12th. On the bound rosewood fretboard, the original slender fretwire is very clean, having been leveled and crowned in the guitar's lifetime, currently showing just a touch of wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-5. The guitar plays well in all positions, the neck is straight, and the truss rod is responsive and ideally adjusted. The scale length measures 24 3/4", and the nut is a full 1 11/16" in width. The headstock retains the original "Standard" truss rod cover, and the guitar has been fitted with a set of Kluson Deluxe tuning machines, more vintage-centric and with better performance than the stock gears, evoking a 1960 Les Paul with double ring tulip buttons.
All of the electronics work as they should, and the Gibson Bill Lawrence humbuckers are wired to a modern harness with 500k CTS pots and premium Bumblebee tone capacitors. The chrome hardware has plenty of shine, and all of the original plastic is present including the quartet of gold speed knobs, cream pickup rings, pickguard, and switch surround.
The original nitro lacquer Heritage Cherry Sunburst finish is bold and saturated on the top, highlighting a speckling of birdseye figuring in the maple cap on the outer two thirds of the top. Cosmetic wear includes targeted buckle rash on the back at the bass side waist and also just north of the control cavity cover, with various scattered nicks primarily on the back and body edges. There is a sliver of wear down to the bare mahogany on the back treble-side waist, while the top shows only a few minor marks adjacent to the binding. The neck profile is extremely smooth and clean, free of palm wear with just one small finish nick on the bass side shoulder at fret 8.
An extremely lightweight and easy-playing Les Paul, this Gibson has a slender profile carve, great pair of vintage Gibson humbuckers, and an uncommonly dark and rich Heritage Cherry Sunburst on the carved maple cap.
The original Gibson "chainsaw" case with blue plush interior is included.
