Up for sale, a 1974 Fender Jazz Bass in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. 100% original, this is a classic example of Fender's premier upscale bass model. The classic tonewood combination of a solid ash body paired with a maple neck and fretboard provide a punchy and authoritative platform with great top end and a touch of growl. Weighing 10lbs 5oz, this Jazz Bass has no shortage of rich sustain and power, and the original gray bobbin pickup pair delivers plenty of upper-midrange burp and treble articulation, with a smooth, broad bass register that can get plenty thumpy with the Tone knob rolled back to taste. We've had this Jazz Bass professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, dialed in with low action, spot-on intonation, and 45-105 roundwound strings.
The maple neck has a C-shaped carve with lots of shoulder and a hearty shape, still effortlessly navigable given the 1 1/2” nut width and measuring .900" deep at the 1st fret and 1.020" at the 12th. The original medium jumbo frets have their full factory height, with decent grooves beneath the strings on frets 1-3, and lighter wear extending until fret 7, with virtually no wear further up the fretboard. The truss rod is responsive and optimally adjusted, the neck is straight, and the bass plays well in all registers with notes that ring out clearly. The headstock face features a block Jazz Bass logo, and the original tuning machines with clover buttons are intact, functioning as intended with light surface patina. The green ink stamp from the neck heel has completely faded, yet all other factory marks are present in the pocket and on the heel.
On the body, all of the original electronics are intact, and the stock gray bobbin pickups both have their original windings, wired to an untouched harness with pots that date to late '74. The original hardware includes the stock bridge and control plate, both with particularly clean chrome plating, and the stock three-ply white pickguard, black pickup covers, and trio of knobs are present too.
The Natural gloss finish highlights the broad and dynamic grain of the ash body, and the finish is 100% original with no touchup or overspray. Cosmetic wear includes some requisite pick scuffing across the guard and various nicks and dings on the body as a whole. There is buckle rash central to the back, through the gloss on the edge of the belly contour, with additional forearm wear muting the gloss on the edge of the top. The neck profile finish is smooth and clean with only a few minor marks.
The original hardshell case is included. The case is extremely clean, with well-kept black leather ends, the raised Fender logo on the exterior, a trio of original functional latches, and the stock handle.
