Up for sale, a 1980's Bill Lawrence T-Style electric guitar model BKIM-60G in excellent condition and in perfect working order. Visually bold with a Cherry Red gloss finish on both the body and neck, the guitar is topped off with a one-ply pickguard carved from lightly figured maple. The Bill Lawrence guitar brand was crafted exclusively for the Japanese market and has a very unique history, resulting from a partnership between Bill Lawrence and Toshio Moridaira. While Bill Lawrence made a name for himself as a Jazz guitarist in the 1950s and subsequently as a guitar and pickup designer, Toshio Moridaira's claim to fame was the creation of the Morris guitar brand, which also produced the H.S. Anderson/Hohner Mat Cat model.
Channeling Fender's Telecaster Plus model with its traditional single coil neck pickup and bridge position humbucker, this Bill Lawrence Tele offers the fine fit and finish work of a premium Japanese guitar, featuring the potent tonewood combination of a one-piece maple neck and an ash body. Snappy and authoritative acoustically with a complex midrange character and plenty of note attack, the guitar retains its original pickup compliment. The neck position ceramic magnet single coil has healthy output at 7k ohms, balancing well with the humbucker at the bridge and offering a cutting, clear sound. The humbucker is lightly wax-potted for ideal feedback rejection, with a full sound that has plenty of muscle without being overwound, metering at 8.6k. The guitar weighs 8lbs 13oz and has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, comfortable action, and accurate intonation.
The one-piece maple neck has a full-feeling soft V profile carve, smooth to the touch with a gloss finish and only a couple minor marks along the length of the neck, measuring .855” deep at the 1st fret and .950” at the 12th. The gloss finished maple board features the original jumbo fretwire which has tons of meat and height, showing only light wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-4 and playing easily in every register. The neck is straight and truss rod optimally adjusted, and the guitar conforms to traditional Fender-centric specs with a 25 1/2“ scale length and 1 5/8“ nut width. The nut is a carved piece of bone, ensuring optimal clarity and sustain. The headstock features a Tele-style shape with a distinctive hook and the Bill Lawrence script logo on the face. The stock gold Kluson-style tuning machines function smoothly and hold pitch well.
The electronics all function as intended, with Master Volume and Tone knobs and a three-way pickup selector switch. The pots were upgraded in '05 with new USA-made properly spec'd CTS components. The gold hardware includes the six-saddle bridge, domed knurled knobs, and four-bolt neck plate etched with Bill Lawrence's name, and the majority of the hardware shows surface patina through the plating. The one-ply pickguard is presumably aftermarket and extremely distinct, dyed to match the body finish and carved from lightly figured maple. The gloss Cherry Red finish shows some scattered shallow dings across the body of the instrument as well as a few light finish scratches central to the back and a couple finish chips on the bass side lower bout edge.
A gigbag is included.
