1964 Gibson Firebird III Reverse Body Vintage Electric Guitar w/ Maestro Vibrola, Firebird V

+ shipping

Up for sale, a 1964 Gibson Firebird II in excellent condition and in perfect working order. Converted to Firebird V spec, the guitar has been fitted with a genuine '60s nickel long frame Maestro Lyre Vibrola as well as an ABR-1 bridge. With zero cracks or repairs and the original pair of patent sticker Firebird mini humbuckers, lively and rich tonal textures simply leap from this instrument, with the warmth and sustain afforded the neck through mahogany/walnut body construction.

Being Gibson's first neck through guitar and sporting the a futuristic design that was the brainchild of automotive designer Ray Dietrich, the Firebird was certainly a drastic shift from previous Gibson offerings and has subsequently become one of their most famous and collectable instruments. This particular Firebird has a very clear and resonant voice with a chime and cut that translates well through the pickups. Plugged in, the bridge pickup has great harmonic clarity and midrange kick, while the neck pickup has girth and warmth without sacrificing focus. The guitar weighs 8lbs 8oz. Professionally setup and dialed in to perfection here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, this Firebird III is ready for stage and studio use.

Front to back the neck profile is extremely slender and fast-feeling at the nut, with aggressive taper up the board to a fuller C carve featuring round shoulders without getting baseball batty in overall heft. The profile measures .720" deep at the 1st fret and .960" at the 12th. The bound Brazilian rosewood fretboard features dot inlay and has been cleanly refretted with medium jumbo fretwire, playing easily in every register and showing just a hint of wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-8. A new hand-carved bone nut has been installed as well, ensuring optimal clarity and sustain and measuring 1 11/16" in width. The original set of nickel "banjo" tuners are intact, along with the original Gibson-silkscreened truss rod cover.

All of the electronics work as they should, with the original pair of nickel cover patent sticker pickups wired to a modern harness. The harness has been painstakingly wired in true vintage fashion with correct plastic sleeved wire and ceramic disc tone caps. The original reflector cap knob set is intact, along with the original pickguard which retains the faded original Firebird graphic. The Maestro Vibrola is genuine 1960s Gibson component, originally gold plated, with the gold stripped down to the bare nickel, perfectly matching the original pickup covers and banjo tuners. The Vibrola works extremely well for surfy dives and quick warbles, jumping back to the original pitch with ease. The bridge is a modern nickel ABR-1, and the original stoptail inserts have been cleanly doweled with closely matched mahogany.

The original two-tone nitro lacquer Sunburst finish is intact, showing a few isolated spots of light clear overspray on the front and back of the body. There is a targeted spot of pick wear through the nitro gloss just north of the guard between the pickups, as well as light buckle rash central to the back and requisite finish chips and dings on the body parameter. The neck profile has scattered spots of light wear through the nitro central to the neck profile, primarily behind frets 2-8.

A vintage Firebird case with purple plush interior is included. The case has had a couple different sets of latch sets, and extra padding has been strategically added to the interior to better support the neck.
