Up for sale, a 1994 Fender Jazz Bass model JBR-85M in exceptional, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original gigbag and hangtags. An early Fender Japan example with active electronics, this Jazz Bass model was crafted in exceedingly small numbers. Produced at the famed Fujigen factory, this golden age "Made in Japan" Jazz Bass was sold only within the Japanese domestic market and is rarely seen in Japan or elsewhere.
Distinctly modern in its features and offered under the "Pro Feel" Fender Japan banner, the JBR-85M features a pair of Hotrod 7J pickups with an active preamp boasting a Master Volume knob, center detent Balance pot for a smooth gradient between the two pickups, and center detent Bass and Treble knobs. The bass has a lightweight ash body with broad, dynamic grain, paired with a one-piece maple neck and a thick slab 22 fret maple board. The neck plate and heel are also contoured, designed to offer extended access to the highest frets. The tonewood combination of ash and maple is bright and articulate, with plenty of authority and note attack, with a complex midrange character that accentuates the smooth growl and upper-mid burp of the single coil pair. In concert with the preamp, the tonal palette is broad, offering boosted thump and plenty of detail. The bass weighs 8lbs 13oz. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this Jazz Bass is strung with 45-100 roundwound strings, dialed in with comfortable action and spot-on intonation.
The neck has a slender C profile carve at the nut with good shoulder in every register and lightly rolled edges on the thick maple slab, measuring .805" deep at the 1st fret and .975" at the 12th. The original medium jumbo fretwire has its full factory height and lots of meat, showing moderate uniform wear on the crowns of frets 1-4, and lighter wear extending beneath the E and A strings until fret 9. The scale length is a full 34", and the bass has Fender's traditional 1 1/2" Jazz Bass nut width. The headstock features vintage-style Fender tuners with full-size baseplates, long stems, and clover buttons. Above the contoured neck plate with micro-tilt adjustment, the Made in Japan text and N-prefix serial number are present.
All of the electronics function flawlessly, with perfect "Fender" gold silkscreening on the pickup covers and gleaming chrome knurled knobs on the control array. The bridge is a unique top-loader design with heavy-duty saddles, officially model FBT-4C. The gloss Natural finish is very clean, with wear limited to a few scattered small dings and light scuffs on the back of the body and a few pick scuffs on the treble side of the pick path. The neck profile gloss finish is flawless save for one tiny scratch on the bass side shoulder adjacent to fret 2 and a light spot of wear through the maple gloss on the fretboard, also between frets 1 and 2.
The original Fender-branded gigbag, hangtags, and manual are included.
