Up for sale, a 1983 Fender Jazz Bass in excellent condition and in perfect working order. A visually unique vintage instrument, this bass pairs a 1983 Jazz Bass neck with cream binding and black dot position markers with a late ‘70s body and hardware compliment. The electronics are all from 1982, with a unique pair of pickups identical to what would be found on the first-year Fullerton vintage reissue instruments, with one black bobbin single coil and one red bobbin.
Tonally, this Jazz Bass is quite the powerhouse, weighing a robust 10lbs 11oz and strung with fresh 45-100 roundwound strings. Offering a pronounced midrange character with full low end kick and a smooth, articulate growl in the treble register, the bass has an ash body that further accentuates the midrange complexity and burp of the pickups, with a clear, defined note attack. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, we've setup this Jazz Bass with low action and accurate intonation.
The neck is an extremely rare Jazz Bass component, originally seen on only a single "all gold" production run in '83, featuring cream neck binding and back dot position markers (confirmed by the CB-prefix serial used only on this run). The neck has a slender C profile carve with decent shoulder thanks to the neck binding, measuring .800" deep at the 1st fret and tapering to .920" at the 12th. The profile retains its original smooth gloss natural finish with a few scattered, shallow marks which aren't distracting to the palm. The original medium jumbo frets have lots of meat and their full factory height, showing just a touch of uniform wear on the crowns of frets 1-3, with virtually no wear further up the fretboard. On the headstock, a vintage set of chrome tuners with tulip buttons and Fender-embossed baseplates are intact, turning smoothly with clean plating. The neck heel retains its original April 27th, 1983 date stamp.
The electronics are all original and consistent with the neck (they presumably came from the same instrument), with a black bobbin neck pickup and red bobbin bridge pickup, identical to the pickups offered in the '62 Fullerton stack knob Jazz Bass offered the same year. The wiring harness features a trio of CTS pots which all date to '82. Originally a three-bolt body, the body was converted to accommodate a more traditional four-bolt F plate, and match the original mounting pattern on the neck. The cream pickup covers, Strat-style knobs, and three-ply pickguard round out the vintage plastic parts. The body has been professionally refinished in gloss Black, with the grain of the ash body visible in the neck pocket. Wear is limited to some light finish scratches and scuffs, mostly relegated to the back.
A hardshell case is included.
