Up for sale, a brandless Marshall-style TMB 18 watt Plexi 2x10” combo amplifier in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with a padded slip cover. This custom-made amplifier effectively captures the finer points of the iconic 18W Marshall 1958 model produced in the mid '60s, known for producing massive, JTM-45-style tones in a more compact and recording/club-friendly form factor.
Perhaps most famous as a studio amp, the so-called “18-watters” were used by artists including Gary Moore, The Pretenders, and AC/DC. This amp boast a dual-channel, four-input design: many owners of 18-watters found little need for the Tremolo channel, and it was very common for the originals to be modded to replace the Tremolo with a hot-rodded Dirty channel, This amp reflects this tendency, delivering mean, hot-rodded gain tones with a highly sculptable three-band EQ. In contrast, the Normal channel offers immediate, crisp cleans with sweetness and muscle, cascading into thick overdriven bark and at higher settings.
The circuit boasts hand-wired turret board construction with low-noise metal film resistors, cloth covered leads, and tubular signal caps. Transformers are properly spec'd, and the amp can accommodate both 4 and 8ohm speaker loads. The tube complement includes a matched pair of EL84 power tubes, an EZ81 rectifier, and 12AX7s in the preamp. The cabinet is loaded with a pair of Weber Ferromax 10F150 10” speakers, featuring ceramic magnet construction, delivering powerful lows; clear, aggressive highs; and smooth, vintage-sounding breakup.
Cosmetic appointments on this amp include cream tolex, salt and pepper grillcloth, white piping, and of course a plexi faceplate complete with gold-topped barrel knobs. The cab is ruggedly built, with cosmetic wear limited to a handful of minor marks and scuffs on the enclosure as a whole, as well as one small split in the control plate.
