Up for sale, an Oberheim OB-X8 in like-new condition and in perfect working order. The iconic, groundbreaking Oberheim OB series are widely considered to be among the most important and influential synths of the 1980s; this modern Oberheim, the first released in nearly four decades, brings those legendary sounds (as heard on Prince’s “1999” and Rush’s “Tom Sawyer,” among countless others) into the 21st century with expanded user-friendly functionality, streamlined aesthetics, and a fully analog signal path.
The OB-X8 effectively combines the classic OB-X, OB-Xa, and OB-8 models into one powerhouse unit, complete with the individual filter types and presets that made each a standout instrument. Far more than emulation or a standard clone, everything down to the modeled envelope responses, components, and the interactions between them has been meticulously crafted to ensure 1:1 realism with the original versions. Sonically, the OB-X8 is full and warm, with the natural richness and organic feel emblematic of the finest analog circuits. At the heart of the classic Oberheim sound is the filter configuration: the OB-X8 features three independent analog filters, one from each model it replicates. From the OB-X is the SEM-lineage, 2-pole, discrete low-pass filter, ideal for huge sound and body with all the different modes of the original SEM design. From the OB-Xa and OB-8 are the genuine Doug Curtis-designed CEM3320 filters, available in 2 and 4-pole options.
The OB-X8 features 8-voice polyphony (up to 8-voice unison stacking), with 2 discrete OB-X/SEM-lineage VCOs per voice and discrete SEM-lineage VCFs for classic Oberheim tone and punch, and there are additional SEM modes for high-pass, band-pass, and notch functionality. The Vintage knob dials in voice-to-voice variability, and bi-timbral capability allows 2 presets to be played simultaneously. There are over 400 presets from the original 3 models (as well as many brand new ones), 600 user presets, MIDI and USB functionality to ensure maximum compatibility with other synths and setups, and a high-visibility OLED display to easily navigate program information and advanced features (including the much-lauded “Page 2” functions). The Programmer tool enables easy saving of sounds, the Arpeggiator section is expansive, and the programmable Levers offer vibrato and modulation options, with a bend box offering a second LFO dedicated to the Mod lever.
The 61-key FATAR keyboard is touch and velocity-sensitive. Cosmetic touches include a matte black finish, knobs with ridged grips and super smooth action, and genuine walnut end caps.
This OB-X8 is nearly new, with barely a mark on it. The factory protective film is intact on the OLED display.
