This versatile keyboard, produced by Clavia in Sweden, has become an industry standard due to its no-corners-cut design, portability, and exceptional sampling/emulation capabilities.The Nord 5D is at its best with organ sounds, and can create some of the best Hammond, Vox, Farfisa, and Pipe organ emulations, along with Rhodes, Wurlitzer, Mellotron, Chamberlain, and Fairlight samples, as well as many acoustic and electric pianos and other instruments. The ability to stack instruments and samples (Bi-Timbral Sound Generation) into unique, otherwise inaccessible combinations further contributes to Nord’s unparalleled versatility, with the perfect sound for any situation able to be dialed up. This 5D features a 1GB memory for the Nord Piano Library, with 256MB memory for the Nord Sample Library, a Program section with a Set List feature for easy changes while performing, and an Organize Mode to rearrange programs and sample on the fly. The density of the controls may seem daunting at first, but they are very logically setup and conducive to both stage and studio performance; from left to right, the control sections are Organ, Piano, Program, Sample Synth, and Effects.The Effects section is perfect for adding a touch of grit, glimmer, or atmosphere to your sound, with two Effects slots as well as an independent stereo Delay with a Tap Tempo button and Ping-Pong mode; a three-band EQ with sweepable Mid; a Compressor/Amp modeler with Twin, JC, Small, Rotary, and Compressor modes, plus a Tube Overdrive effect. The Amp/Speaker simulation features the same Vintage 122 Rotary Speaker simulations found in the flagship Nord C2D.From a hardware standpoint, this Nord is outfitted with top-tier componentry for an exceptionally comfortable and tactile user experience; the 61 velocity-sensitive, semi-weighted waterfall keys have fantastic action, with just the right amount of firmness, sensitivity, and smoothness. Additionally, the 5D 61 features Nord’s much-lauded physical Drawbars, and can accommodate the Nord Half-Moon switch for stop/slow/fast modes. The C2D B3 Tone Wheel engine is the result of over a decade of research and perfecting of Nord’s tone wheel simulations; Clavia have analyzed signals from each of the 91 spinning tone wheels inside several original instruments to dial in the most faithful recreation possible. The B3 Tone Wheel Bass features classic 16’ and 8’ bass drawbars in the left hand and can even be used with the Piano and Sample sections for a thick and meaty bottom end. Like all Nord keyboards, this 5D features an instantly recognizable all-red design, including the gloss finished figured wood end caps.
