Up for sale, a 2020 Danelectro Sitar ‘60s vintage reissue in near-mint, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. This modern iteration of the Vincent Bell-designed Coral Sitar mirrors the original tonally and aesthetically in virtually every respect, with a Red Crackle finish over a Masonite and poplar body frame. This hollow design has a distinctive acoustic resonance, particularly beneficial for the drone strings on this model.
Outfitted with a trio of lipstick pickups, each with their own set of dedicated Volume and Tone knobs, this Sitar is a versatile and sweet-sounding model, with the chime and hollow twang associated with the original Lipstick single coil design, and the choked zing of a sitar simulated by the pad beneath the strings forward of the bridge. There's a real roundness and warmth to these pickups too, as well as a percussive clarity that keeps the sound focused and present regardless of the knob settings. The drone strings provide a unique overtone, and the mix of the drone can easily be adjusted to taste. Featherweight at 6lbs 12oz, this Danelectro has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.
The maple neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve with good shoulders and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .820” deep at the 1st fret and .950” at the 12th. The slab pau ferro fretboard has a 14” radius, and the medium jumbo fretwire is flawless. This guitar plays cleanly up the 24 3/4“ scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod, and the nut measures 1 11/16” in width. The headstock has Kluson-style tuners and the serialized “Made in Korea” sticker.
All of the electronics function as intended, with independent Volume and Tone controls for each of the three pickups. Hardware/plastics include the Gotoh “Sitar” bridge, sextet of knobs, raised transparent plexi pickguard, and chrome-plated Lipstick pickup covers and surrounds. There's barely a mark on the Red Crackle satin finish, and the satin finish on the neck profile is similarly immaculate.
A Gator-brand gigbag is included.
