Up for sale, a 2024 Gibson Custom Shop Historic Limited Edition Murphy Lab Aged 1959 Les Paul Standard “R9” Brazilian Rosewood in like-new condition, complete with the aged Lifton hardshell case, CoA, all hangtags, and case candy. These instruments utilize handpicked materials of the highest quality, including Brazilian rosewood fretboards, super lightweight mahogany bodies, and AAAA-figured maple tops, cherry-picked and set aside specifically for this release. This limited edition Brazilian run features aging unique and distinct from other Murphy Lab offerings, exclusive to this distinguished limited run, with a heavy treatment and notable touches like custom-aged plated and plastic parts. Each finish option was developed and selected by Tom Murphy as well, comprising six colors and 50 instruments in each finish. This example is finished in "Tom's Tea."

This Murphy Lab R9 represents the peak of Gibson craftsmanship: from laser-scanned dimensions to chemically-recreated plastics to color-matched finishes, every element of a 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard has been rendered in unbelievable detail. Representing the culmination of decades of work by Custom Shop's expert team - a tireless quest to bring accuracy and authenticity to the hands of players - this particularly R9's tiger maple top creates a perfect chevron behind the bridge.

Tom Murphy, the Master Artisan and namesake of Gibson's Murphy Lab, was central to the creation of the Gibson Custom Shop and personally developed the various processes on display for aging the finish, hardware and plastics of these Historic Series instruments. With a quarter century in the saddle, Murphy is a celebrated authority for replicating the character of vintage instruments on the canvas of newly-created guitars.

Acoustically, this Les Paul is extremely lively and powerful with tons of bark, percussive cut and natural sustain. The particular CustomBucker pair in this model features Alnico V magnets and zebra bobbins. These low-medium output pickups have plenty of chirp, honk, and bloom. Dynamic, highly detailed, and comfortably versatile with any playing style, these pickups have just a hair more heat than the more commonly used Alnico III CustomBuckers. The bridge has plenty of bite and sweet growl, while the neck pickup has the buttery girth, textured and harmonically-rich. Exceedingly lightweight at only 8lbs 5oz, this Les Paul has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.
