Up for sale, a 2021 Waterloo WL-JK Jumbo King in near-mint condition, complete with the original hardshell case. A subsidiary of Collings, all Waterloo instruments are hand-crafted in Austin, TX and are made to the incredibly high standards applied to all Collings instruments. A one-owner instrument, the Waterloo Jumbo King is full-bodied in both tone and stature. The largest size offering in the Waterloo line and a modern day tribute to jumbo-sized guitars of the early 1940s, the model on which the Jumbo King is based was originally manufactured by Regal for the mail-order enterprise Montgomery Ward.
This slope shoulder body size was designed to provide performers of the '40s with enough volume and power for professional radio work, and the WL-JK accomplishes this and more by employing a full five-inch body depth and a slightly narrow waist to enhance both the bass and treble response. The vintage-inspired X-bracing on the spruce top yields tons of projection and a bold and woody overarching tonal character. The 25 1/2" scale puts ideal tension on the top, and the solid mahogany back and sides deliver a punchy, layered sound with midrange growl and a sparkling treble sweetness. The mahogany neck has a deep V profile carve, measuring an impressive .970" deep at the 1st fret and graduating to a modestly massive 1.045" at the 9th. The rosewood fretboard features medium nickel silver frets that show just a hint of wear beneath the plain strings on the crowns of frets 1-4, playing cleanly up the 25 1/2" scale. The carved bone nut measures a full 1 3/4" in width, and the headstock features a rosewood overlay, stenciled Waterloo - Jumbo King text, and Golden Age Restoration antiqued strip tuners.
The ebony bridge has a compensated drop-in bone saddle with 2 3/8" string spacing, ideal for fingerstyle work and accurate picking. Cosmetic accents include a tortoise pickguard and herringbone rosette, and the nitro lacquer Sunburst finish exhibits just a few pinhead-sized nicks and a faint finish scuff or two on the body as a whole, largely relegated to the treble side of the strum path. A strap button has also been added to the treble side of the neck heel.
