Up for sale, a 2021 Fender Hama Okamoto Katana bass in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original gigbag and hangtags. This limited run, discontinued “Made in Japan” signature model, designed in collaboration with Japanese bass phenom Hama Okamoto, takes its design from Okamoto’s own original Fender Katana bass, with some added tweaks for optimal performance and playability. The original Katana was released in 1985 under the Squier banner and was only produced until ‘86, featuring an eye-catching angular design and the electronics of a P Bass.

Tonewoods include a basswood body, maple neck, and thick slab rosewood fretboard, and this bass is featherweight at just 7lbs 1oz, with ample warmth and natural resonance captured by the stock Fender Pure Vintage ‘63 split coil pickup. This USA-made pickup is thick and chewy, with ample thump and sweet treble growl. This Katana has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 45-105 roundwound strings, easy-playing action, and spot-on intonation.

The maple neck has a medium depth U-shaped profile carve with generous shoulders and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .830” deep at the 1st fret and .980” at the 12th. The thick slab rosewood fretboard has a vintage-spec 7 1/4“ radius, and the stock medium jumbo fretwire is in great shape, with well-rounded crowns, only showing a hint of wear beneath the strings on the crowns of frets 1-5. This bass plays cleanly up the 32” scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod, and the nut measures 1.615” (41mm) in width, carved from bone for optimal clarity and sustain. The pointed headstock has a Fender Katana logo, and the clover-button tuners turn smoothly and hold accurate pitch. The back of the headstock retains the “Made in Japan” text, JD21-prefix serial, and Hama Okamoto signature.

All of the electronics function as intended, with the USA-made Fender Pure Vintage ‘63 split coil pickup wired to the stock harness and governed by Master Volume and Tone controls. The chrome-plated hardware shines like new, including the flat-topped knurled knobs, ashtray bridge cover, and bridge base with vintage-style spiral (threaded) saddles. Plastics comprise the three-ply red tortoise pickguard, a feature that was not present on the original Squier Katanas and adds a welcome rounded aesthetic accent to the sharp angles of the body.

Cosmetic wear on the gloss Olympic White finish is limited to a few chips at the very tip of the bass-side body point, a few small scuffs on the bass side of the sturm path, and a handful of faint scratches and marks on the back, largely concentrated at the lower bout. The smooth ambered gloss on the neck profile is pristine.

The original Fender-branded form-fit gigbag is included, along with the factory hangtags.
