Up for sale, a 2020 Collings 290 in near-mint condition, finished in Doghair and complete with the original hardshell case and factory paperwork. Named for the scenic 290 highway that winds past the Collings shop though the Texas Hill Country, the 290 is a modern day tribute to the Les Paul Special, yet this particular example is fitted with Lollar Imperial humbuckers from the factory. This Collings is one of the finest USA-made boutique guitars available today, with an eye towards history and exacting standards for tone and modern playability. Tonewoods include a solid Honduran mahogany body and neck capped with a rosewood fingerboard, and each piece of mahogany is acclimated and hand-selected for density and acoustic response. The Lollar Imperial PAFs are extremely dynamic and complex-sounding, purposefully wound for each pickup position to ensure a vital, unique tone in every setting on the three way switch. The guitar is extremely lively and acoustically resonant at 7lbs 4oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar to ensure ideal intonation and playability with 11-49 strings.Every aspect of the 290 is dialed in to feel both familiar and elegant, and the neck profile has a '50s C shape. This profile measures .865" deep at the 1st fret and .967" at the 9th, and this full-feeling C profile is akin to a ’59 Gibson carve, offering particularly round shoulders and ideal substance without quite the heft of some “baseball bat” necks. The rosewood fretboard boasts a 12" radius with a 24 7/8" scale length and practically perfect medium 18% nickel silver frets with well-rounded crowns. The nut measures 1 11/16" in width, and the headstock features a custom etched 290 truss rod cover as well as an ebony veneer finished in high gloss nitro lacquer with Collings' distinct "haircut" shape on the top edge. The Collings-branded nickel Gotoh tuning machines feature ivoroid buttons and turn very smoothly. The electronics function flawlessly, with the Lollar Imperial pair wired to stock tightly spec'd Dimarzio pots and '50s-style wiring. Hardware includes a nickel-plated ABR-1 bridge and corresponding stopbar, and the plating is notably clean on the hardware and Lollar pickup covers. Plastics include a multi-ply black pickguard which shows a bt of requisite pick scuffing. The Doghair finish highlights the grain of the mahogany and Collings prides themselves on meticulously hand-sanding their finishes between coats. This results in an ultra thin nitro lacquer gloss finish that's between .005 and .007 thousandths of an inch in final thickness, which maximizes the acoustic response of the instrument while providing excellent protection. Exceedingly well-kept since new, we'll conservatively classify the condition as near mint barring some errant tiny nick or faint finish scuff, with the factory protective clear plastic still intact on the control cavity cover. The neck profile is flawless. The original Ameritage hardshell case is included, along with the original serialized warranty card, sealed polish cloth, and Collings sticker.
