Up for sale, a 2019 Paul Reed Smith John Mayer Signature Silver Sky in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original softshell case and hangtags. The PRS Silver Sky is the result of a close collaboration between John Mayer and Paul Reed Smith; it’s an idealized iteration of the Stratocaster platform, incorporating elements of Mayer and Smith’s favorites ‘63 and ‘64 Strats with just the right amount of modern innovation.
The tonewood complement includes an alder body and maple neck, ensuring a balanced and articulate platform for the trio of 635JM pickups. And while the body has a familiar S-style shape, it also offers appreciably more contour in the treble side cutaway for effortless fretting in the higher registers. The 635JM single coils are very round and full-sounding, retaining a distinctive sparkle and treble detail without any "ice pick" harshness. Featherweight at 6lbs 13oz, we've had this Silver Sky dialed in here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.
The maple neck has a medium C-shaped profile carve with well-rounded shoulders and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .850” deep at the 1st fret and .975” at the 12th. The thick slab rosewood fretboard has a vintage-spec 7 1/4“ radius, and the slender fretwire is practically perfect, playing cleanly up the 25 1/2“ scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. The nut measures 1 21/32” in width, carved from bone for optimal clarity and sustain. The headstock shape is based on PRS’s trademark design, but inverted both to accommodate Mayer’s playing style and also to keep string length consistent behind the nut. The Kluson-style locking PRS tuners feature matte gray Schaller-style buttons and hold pitch particularly well even with liberal vibrato use.
All of the electronics function as they should, with the trio of 635JM single coil pickups wired to a traditional Strat-style Volume/Tone/Tone control array and five-way blade selector switch. The nickel plating on the jack cup and bridge base shines like new, and the vibrato with steel block takes the patented PRS design and incorporates Gen III knife-edge screws. Setup flush to the body in the neutral position so that the vibrato only goes down in pitch, the bridge’s increased contact with the body allows the guitar itself to be acoustically louder, which in turn improves the signal to noise ratio of the single coil pickups. The vibrato arm also locks in with a convenient set screw. Plastics include the original trio of knobs and three-ply pickguard, with some requisite scuffing along the treble side of the strum path. An additional tortoise pickguard is also included.
The gloss Onyx finish has a subtle metallic sparkle, with cosmetic wear limited to some light buckle worming across the back and just a few minor nicks on the body as a whole, relegated to the lower bout perimeter and on the top at the lower bout, with one more prominent ding on the treble-side edge at the waist. The gloss finish on the neck profile is flawless, and the finish is lightly applied with an easy-playing feel.
The original PRS-branded softshell case is included, along with the factory hangtags and additional tortoise pickguard.
