Up for sale, a 2019 Gibson Custom Shop Historic 1958 Les Paul Standard “R8” in exceptional, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original Lifton-style brown hardshell case, COA, hangtags and case candy. This Custom Shop ‘58 Les Paul Standard features a Bourbon Burst VOS nitro lacquer finish, highlighting the straight tiger flame figuring across the bookmatched two-piece carved maple top. Other premium appointments include Custom Bucker PAFs, hot hide glue construction, and vintage-correct plastics and hardware. This instrument is notably lightweight for a Les Paul at only 8lbs 10oz.
The Custom Bucker humbuckers are Gibson's latest and most highly praised iteration of the PAF platform, available exclusively in select Custom Shop models. Featuring AlNiCo III magnets, these low-medium output pickups have all the chirp, honk, and bloom you could want. The set in this particular guitar is dynamic, highly detailed, balanced; comfortably versatile with any playing style. The bridge has plenty of bite and growl, while the neck pickup has the buttery girth and power one expects without sacrificing clarity. Demonstrative of what quality tonewoods are capable of, there are few things finer than the rich warmth of mahogany paired with a carved maple top that adds cut and attack. This Les Paul has been dialed in beyond the factory setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and spot-on intonation.
The quartersawn one-piece mahogany neck has a "50s Rounded Medium C" profile carve, a chunky and substantial shape with generous shoulder and a hair less overall heft than some of Gibson’s more aggressive “baseball bat” carves, measuring .905” deep at the 1st fret and 1.025” at the 12th. The bound Indian rosewood fretboard features aged cellulose nitrate trapezoid inlay, with flawless Historic-spec narrow/tall fretwire. This guitar plays cleanly up the 24 3/4“ scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. The nylon nut measures 1 11/16” in width. The headstock sports an authentic stepped two-ply truss rod cover, and the original Kluson Deluxe single-line tuning machines turn smoothly and hold accurate pitch, with push-in bushings. The neck joint features long tenon construction, with a hide glue fit.
All of the electronics function as intended, and both pickups retain the small “Patent Applied For” decals on their baseplates. The harness features untouched solder joints and oil-in-paper “bumblebee” tone caps, and the requisite “R8” stamp is also present in the corner of the control cavity. The original hardware has its factory applied light muting of the sheen on the nickel plating, including the pickup covers, no-wire ABR-1 bridge with nickel-plated brass saddles and corresponding lightweight aluminum stopbar. Plastics comprise the quartet of butyrate gold bonnet knobs, amber switch tip, M69 cellulose acetate butyrate pickup rings, and the single-ply cream pickguard.
The Bourbon Burst VOS nitro lacquer gloss finish highlights dimensional, bookmatched flame figuring extending evenly across the top, framed by one-ply royalite binding (which exhibits no "bleed" of the aniline dye). This is an extremely well-kept Gibson, with cosmetic wear limited to a few faint finish scratches in the clear coat of the gloss, mostly relegated to the back and sides. The smooth gloss on the neck profile is flawless.
The original brown Lifton-style Gibson hardshell case with pink interior is included, as well as the original hangtags, factory paperwork, COA, and additional plastic cover plate for the switch cavity.
