Up for sale, a 2017 Fender Aerodyne Jazz Bass model AJB in exceptional, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. A “Made in Japan” model sold exclusively within the Japanese domestic market, this Aerodyne is unique both visually and sonically; featuring a PJ pickup configuration, bound body, satin-finished neck, and matching headstock.
While most Fender basses that have the PJ pickup configuration use a Precision-style body, this Aerodyne has the sleek looks and comfortable 1 1/2" nut width of the Jazz Bass, providing both the ample thump and heft of a split coil Precision neck pickup and the midrange cut and articulation of a Jazz pickup at the bridge. Tonewoods include a basswood body, maple neck, and thick slab rosewood fretboard. This bass weighs 8lbs 10oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 45-100 roundwound strings, comfortable action, and spot-on intonation.
The maple neck has a medium depth U-shaped profile carve with full shoulders in every register and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .840” deep at the 1st fret and .970” at the 12th. The thick slab rosewood fretboard is a notably dark cut with a vintage-spec 7 1/4“ radius, and the slender fretwire only exhibits a faint hint of wear beneath the strings on the crowns of frets 1-4. This bass plays cleanly up the 34” scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. The nut measures 1 1/2“ in width. The matching headstock features chrome-plated clover-button tuners which turn smoothly and hold accurate pitch. The “Made in Japan” text and JD17-prefix serial are present above the four-bolt neck plate.
All of the electronics function as intended, with individual Volume knobs for each pickup and a Master Tone control. The chrome Strat-style knobs, control plate, and bridge all have plenty of shine, and the three-ply black pickguard rounds out the plastics. The gloss Candy Apple Red (catalog: Original Candy Red) is a dark, rich application, framed on top by cream binding, and cosmetic wear is limited to just a handful of faint scratches in the clear coat on the body as a whole. The smooth satin finish on the neck profile is immaculate.
