Up for sale, a 2016 Suhr Classic S Antique HSH in near-mint condition and in perfect working order, complete with hardshell case and build sheet. Suhr bears the name of its creator, John Suhr, who has 45 years of guitar building experience, including leading Fender's Custom Shop as a Senior Master Builder. Bringing his wealth of experience to his own brand beginning in 1997, the Suhr Classic S Antique takes the traditional Stratocaster platform and seamlessly blends both vintage and modern features for the ultimate in performance and playability.
Tonewoods include a two-piece roasted alder body and a maple neck capped by a thick slab 22 fret Indian rosewood fretboard. Acoustically, this guitar is warm and resonant; qualities faithfully translated by the stock HSH pickup complement. The humbuckers are a pair of Suhr Thornbuckers, the signature pickup of Pete Thorn, which deliver PAF-style tones with tight, responsive bass, pristine trebles, and slightly scooped mids for optimal clarity, when clean or when dirty. When driven, the Thornbuckers offer bold crunch and singing sustain with complex harmonics. The middle position single coil is a Suhr ML Standard, acting as an excellent counterpoint to the humbuckers with sweet, sparkling Strat snap. The in-between positions on the five-way selector switch yield silky, hollow cut and chime, and the push/pull global coil tap for the humbucker pair offers even more traditional single coil voicings. This Suhr weighs 7lbs 11oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action and spot-on intonation.
The maple neck has Suhr's "Even C RB" neck profile carve, a proprietary shape that Reb Beach specified for his custom guitars. This medium depth C carve has full, inviting shoulders and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .800” deep at the 1st fret and .850” at the 12th. The thick slab Indian rosewood fretboard features clay dot inlay, a compound 10”-14” radius, and flawless stainless steel jumbo fretwire. This guitar plays cleanly up the 25 1/2” scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. The stock bone nut measures 1.650” in width, and on the headstock, the Suhr locking tuners hold excellent pitch and turn smoothly.
All of the electronics function as intended, with the HSH pickup complement wired to the stock harness and governed by a five-way pickup selector switch and Strat-style Volume/Tone/Tone controls. The push/pull global coil tap is located on the second Tone knob. The Gotoh 510 2-post bridge has smooth, responsive vibrato action, returning to pitch quickly for sharp flutters and deeper dives alike. Plastics comprise the dark red tortoise guard, matching tortoise trem cavity cover, and a trio of aged Strat-style knobs. The humbuckers have raw nickel covers, complimenting the heavy relic on the nitro lacquer gloss Olympic White finish. It’s a dramatic relic, with extensive lacquer checking to boot. While on a heavy relic it's always difficult to separate factory aging from natural playwear, suffice it to say this guitar has been sparingly played since new. The neck profile is silky smooth, worn to the bare maple as part of the relic process.
A G&G black tolex hardshell case is included, along with the build sheet and Suhr factory paperowrk. A second tortoise pickguard is included, with a two-knob Master Volume and Tone control scheme.
