Up for sale, a 2016 Ibanez J Custom RG8550MZ in near-mint condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original molded hardshell case, hangtags, and CoA. Produced at the venerable Fujigen factory as part of Ibanez’s upper-tiered J Custom line, this RG features a AAA flamed maple top highlighted by a vibrant Red Spinel finish, HSH DiMarzio pickups, and an Edge Zero tremolo with ZPS3 stabilizer.
Tonewoods include an African mahogany body, five-piece maple/walnut neck, and a maple fingerboard, and this guitar has a balanced, immediate-sounding acoustic platform with excellent articulation, qualities channelled through the trio of DiMarzio pickups. The humbucker in the bridge position is a DiMarzio Tone Zone, a bold and powerful high-output pickup that offers great low end and lower-midrange response to ensure the tone stays full and fat. The neck humbucker is a DiMarzio Air Norton, a warm, open-sounding pickup designed with a unique magnetic structure to reduce string pull and increase sustain while maintaining dynamic feel and responsiveness to user inputs. The central single coil is a DiMarzio True Velvet, with single coil shimmer and snap, blending well with the humbuckers at the “in-between” positions on the five-way pickup selector switch. This Ibanez weighs 7lbs 12oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 9-42 strings, slinky action, and spot-on intonation.
The five-piece maple/walnut neck sports Ibanez’s RG J Custom Super Wizard shape, an exceptionally slender D-shaped carve with round shoulders and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .690” deep at the 1st fret and .770” at the 12th. The 24-fret maple fretboard sports abalone/pearloid Tree of Life inlay, and the jumbo fretwire is flawless, sporting Ibanez’s proprietary J Custom Edge treatment for ideal comfort in the palm. This guitar plays cleanly up the 25 1/2“ scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod, reinforced with KTS titanium rods for stability, and the locking nut measures a full 1 11/16 in width. The headstock sports a matching flame maple veneer, and the gold Gotoh tuning machines turn smoothly and hold pitch as they should. The All Access Neck Joint (AANJ) features a heel-less contour for unparalleled access to the higher frets.
All of the electronics function as intended, with the trio of DiMarzio pickups governed by a five-way pickup selector switch and Master Volume and Tone controls. The Edge Zero tremolo remains stable through the deepest divebombs, assisted by the ZPS3 stabilizer, which also facilitates easier string changes and setups. The gold-plated hardware is all notably clean.
The AAA flame maple top has tight, straight figuring, with cosmetic wear on the Red Spinel finish limited to a scant few minor dings on the back and a handful of faint scratches in the clear coat on the body as a whole. The smooth Velvetouch satin finish on the neck profile is immaculate.
The original Ibanez-branded molded hardshell case is included, along with the hangtags and CoA.
