Up for sale, a 2013 Larrivée OM-10-RX Custom in showroom-clean condition, complete with the original hardshell case. A premium iteration of the OM-10 Deluxe Series platform, this particular Larrivée was made for the NAMM trade show, and is one of the highly regarded "Crazy Rosewood" models.

On a wood sourcing trip to India in 1997, Jean Larrivée found roughly 150 sets of the most extraordinary rosewood he’d ever seen. These cuts of rosewood were put away for over a decade and a half. In 2013, Larrivee began releasing instruments featuring these premium bookmatched cuts of figured rosewood (a feature not otherwise available as a custom option from Larrivee). This example has provenance from Larrivee, confirming its status as one of roughly 100 instruments ultimately produced in this highly limited line.

Features include an X-braced Sitka spruce top, and this particular cut of Sitka is referred to as ‘Moonwood’, as it was cut on dates that coincide with certain lunar periods. This follows an ancestral tradition among European luthiers who assure that this influences the quality of the wood and the sound produced. The tonewoods are rounded out by a mahogany neck capped by an ebony fretboard, and the body is framed by and inlaid with copious abalone.

The tone is rich and clear, with the focused power inherent in rosewood and the articulation and note attack of ebony. The guitar offers a clear bass register with ample warmth and headroom, and the trebles are balanced and sparkling, with the excellent projection one expects from the OM body size and scale. The guitar is very dynamically responsive for fingerpicking too. Featherweight at 4lbs 10oz, this Larrivée has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 12-53 bronze strings, dialed in for easy-playing action.

The mahogany neck has a slender C-shaped profile with just enough roundness in the shoulders, measuring .795” deep at the 1st fret and .885” at the 9th. The ebony fingerboard has 14 frets clear of the body, featuring maple binding and Larrivée’s ornate abalone “Deluxe” inlays. The medium frets are practically perfect, with their full factory height and well-rounded crowns, showing only a hint of wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-3. This Larrivée plays cleanly up the full 25 1/2” scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. The carved bone nut measures 1 3/4” in width. The headstock sports a polished ebony overlay, and the Larrivée JCL tuning machines turn smoothly and hold accurate pitch with notably clean chrome plating and an 18:1 gear ratio.

The body features abalone top binding and multi-ply back binding, framed by an outer ply of Indian rosewood. The soundhole has a multi-ring abalone/maple rosette, and the Larrivée label is visible through the soundhole, with the serial stamped on the heel block. The ebony bridge features abalone inlay and a tall compensated saddle. This is an exceedingly well-kept guitar, with barely a scratch on the gloss Natural finish which highlights the dynamic cuts of bookmatched rosewood hand-picked for the back and sides. The smooth gloss finish on the neck profile is similarly pristine.

The original Larrivée-branded hardshell case with plush blue interior is included.
