Up for sale, a 2013 Fender Mustang '69 vintage reissue in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. Made exclusively for the Japanese market and rarely seen outside its country of origin, this Mustang model (officially model MG69) is a testament to the workmanship and eye for detail evident in the Made in Japan Fender models.
There's plenty to love about this Mustang, from the lightweight and resonant body to the pair of stock single coil pickups that deliver plenty of snap and twang. The guitar is featherweight at 6lbs 9oz, and the crisp, clear voice of the instrument when strummed acoustically translates well through the pickups. Of course one of the most fun sounds on the Mustang is the out-of-phase setting, engaged when both on/off/on pickup selector switches are at their innermost or outermost points. The quack and spank of that particular setting is unique to the Mustang, and there's plenty of tonal range between the two pickups, with meatier sounds when the neck pickup is singled out. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this Mustang is strung with 10-46 strings and dialed in with spot-on intonation and low action.
The maple neck has a medium C-shaped profile carve with lightly rolled fretboard edges and round shoulders in every register, measuring .820" deep at the 1st fret and .875" at the 12th. The thick veneer rosewood fretboard boasts 22 flawless slender frets which retain their full factory height. The scale length measures 24", and the neck is straight with a responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The nut measures 1 9/16" in width. The headstock features Kluson-style white button tuning machines which turn smoothly and hold pitch as they should. Above the four-bolt F heck plate, the Made in Japan text and JD13-prefix serial number are present.
All of the electronics function as intended, with Master Volume and Tone controls governing the two pickups. The chrome-plated hardware is bright and clean, and plastics include a red tortoise pickguard which shows some pick scuffing across both the guard and neck pickup cover. The gloss Daphne Blue finish exhibits one ding on the back lower bout body edge, a singular small finish chip on the outside edge of the treble-side body horn, and just a few additional minor marks and faint finish scratches on the body as a whole. The gloss on the neck profile is flawless.
