Up for sale, a 2012 Fender Kurt Cobain Mustang in near mint, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, finished in Sonic Blue. An extremely rare left-handed example from a limited and long ago discontinued "Made in Japan" production run, this Fender is a no-nonsense tool perfectly suited to creating both the distorted churn and raw single coil cut heard across Nirvana's catalog. The pickup complement includes a Fender Japan single coil in the neck position and a USA-made Seymour Duncan SH-4 JB humbucker in the bridge position. As Duncan's original hot-rodded humbucker, the pickup offers full, powerful low end, detailed highs, and an upper-midrange bump that adds crunch and chunk to heavy chords that translates to a singing, vocal-like quality when playing single notes or solos. The guitar weighs 7lbs 5oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 11-48 strings, slinky action, and accurate intonation. The maple neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve with round shoulders and lightly rolled fretboard edges, modeled after one of Cobain's favorite '60s Mustangs. The profile measures .815" deep at the 1st fret and .925" at the 12th. The scale length is 24", with a vintage-spec 7 1/4" fretboard radius and 1 9/16" wide bone nut. The rosewood fretboard retains the original flawless slender frets, and the guitar plays cleanly in every register. On the headstock, the original Kluson-style chrome tuners turn smoothly and hold pitch as they should. The "Made in Japan" script text and JD12-prefix serial are present above the Fender-embossed four-bolt neck plate. All of the electronics work as intended, with the Seymour Duncan SH-4 humbucker in the bridge position and a Fender Japan single coil at the neck. The pickups are governed by on/off/on pickup selector switches and a pair of Master Volume and Tone knobs. The hardware has gleaming chrome plating, including the Gibson-style Tune-o-Matic bridge and vibrato unit which has a very smooth response, complete with the original arm. The plastic parts are near mint, and the red tortoise pickguard retains the original clear protective factory film, also providing great contrast to the Sonic Blue gloss finish. This guitar is stunningly well-kept, with just a couple exceedingly faint shallow marks on the back, while the ambered gloss on the neck profile is flawless. The original Fender-branded padded gigbag is included.
