Up for sale, a 2011 Tokai Vintage Series model SG-118 electric guitar in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with a vintage hardshell case. Crafted with the utmost quality in Japan and now rebranded as the SG-124 due to a recent price increase from Tokai, this SG features a two-piece African mahogany body paired with a one-piece African mahogany neck and bound Indian rosewood fingerboard.
Clearly taking its cues from the early '60s SG Standard, this SG-118 features a small pickguard, ABR-1-style bridge, small "open book" headstock shape, Kluson-style tuners, and pearloid trapezoid inlays. The set neck mahogany construction offers a rich natural resonance that translates well through the stock pair of PAF MK2 humbuckers. Measuring just under 9k ohms, the bridge pickup has a growly, biting sound which pairs well with the smoother and warmer sounding neck pickup that measures 8k ohms. Featherweight at 7lbs, we've had this Tokai professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings and comfortable action.
The one-piece African mahogany neck has what Tokai describes as a "60s style U" profile carve, in reality a slender C shape with modest shoulder, measuring .840” deep at the 1st fret and .930” at the 12th. The bound Indian rosewood fretboard features trapezoid inlay and stock slender frets. The frets have their full factory height and good meat, with light uniform wear beneath the strings on the 1st fret, extending exclusively beneath the plain strings to fret 10. Conforming to Gibson specs, the scale length is 24 3/4“, and the hand-carved bone nut measures 1 11/16“ in width. The “open book” headstock has a clean script "Tokai" inlay, small crown logo, and set of Gotoh-made Kluson-style tuners that look the part with greened tulip buttons.
On the body, the electronics work as they should, with a three-way pickup selector toggle and individual Volume and Tone controls governing the PAF MK2 humbucker pair. The nickel-plated hardware shows light surface patina, and plastics include a small batwing pickguard, black reflector cap knobs, and an amber switch tip. Cosmetic wear on the Black "Thin Skin Polyurethane" gloss finish includes some requisite pick scuffing favoring the treble side of the pick path, a scratch on the back bass side body horn, a couple small finish chips on the headstock tips and body parameter, and light scattered finish scratches and marks, mostly relegated to the back. The neck profile sports a clean gloss finish with just a couple minuscule marks that are not distracting to the palm.
A vintage aluminum trimmed hardshell case is included.
