Up for sale, a 2011 Marshall AFD100 Slash Appetite for Destruction tube amp head in near-mint condition and in perfect working order. A limited edition model discontinued over a decade ago, the AFD100 was a collaboration between Slash and Marshall, yielding an extremely versatile single channel design. Loaded with a quad of Wing C Svetlana 6550 power tubes, the AFD100 deftly combines the best of a 1959 Super Lead and a JCM800 2203, with a two-way mini toggle that zeroes in on two of Slash's most iconic tonal profiles.
The "#34" setting (up) refers to the Studio Instrument Rentals stock number on the JCM800 2203 head Slash used from Use Your Illusion onwards with ripping crunch, aggressive trebles and plenty of midrange kick. The AFD setting (down) adds even more gain, and this tonal profile is appropriately based on the 1959 Super Lead used throughout Appetite's recording, offering more gain and additional midrange push.
Compared to EL34s, the 6550s have a wider frequency response with exceptional clarity, even with extreme saturation. The three-band EQ and Presence knobs have a wide sweep, scooping the mids, pushing the lows and taming the trebles as needed. And the dynamic, touch sensitive nature of the head is preserved when using the power attenuator (Master), dialing the signal down to a mere .1 watts.
The back panel features an external bias trim pot and individual status LEDs for each power tube, with an Effects Loop and myriad of speaker cab outputs for different ohmage needs.
Cosmetically, this Marshall is a stunner, with near-mint tolex, piping and hardware, and a pristine Marshall logo. The faceplate presents extremely well with its full complement of knobs, and the only wear of note is through some of the fragile silkscreen lettering on the back of the head.
