Up for sale, a 2011 Hofner New President archtop in like-new condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case and hangtag. This finely-crafted German-made archtop is a modern reimagining of Hofner’s classic President (first introduced in the early ‘50s), featuring a solid hand-carved German AAA spruce top, deeply figured African maple back and rims, and a European hard rock neck capped by a bound ebony fingerboard.
Featuring a 16” lower bout width and a 3 5/8“ body depth, this Hofner projects very well, with a single bass tone bar bracing the carved top (echoing traditional violin and archtop construction). The instrument offers great string-to-string balance, a warm midrange and a dry, percussive cut. The sound has just enough brightness, with a glassiness and articulation attributable to the ebony fingerboard. The floating Hofner/Kent Armstrong pickup is rich-sounding, faithfully capturing the natural sound of the instrument with a focused-yet-open low end and sweet, singing trebles. This New President weighs 5lbs 8oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 12-53 roundwound strings, easy-playing action, and accurate intonation.
The flame maple neck has a substantial asymmetrically profiled (essentially C-shaped) carve with generous, inviting shoulders and ideal heft, measuring .880” deep at the 1st fret and .930” at the 12th. The bound ebony fretboard sports mother of pearl block inlay, with 16 frets clear of the body, and the medium jumbo fretwire is flawless. This guitar plays cleanly up the 25 1/4“ scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod, and the bone nut measures 44mm (a hair of 1 3/4”) in width. The headstock features Lily pearl inlay and gold-plated Schaller tuning machines with ebony buttons.
All of the electronics function as intended, with the floating pickup governed by ebony Volume and Tone controls mounted on the carved ebony pickguard. The carved ebony bridge has a brass insert base, and the carved ebony tailpiece rounds out the hardware.
The gloss shellac Natural finish highlights deep, three-dimensional flame figuring in the maple that extends evenly across the back and rims. There's barely a scratch on the guitar, and the neck profile is similarly pristine.
The original Hofner-branded tweed hardshell case is included, along with the hangtag.
