Up for sale, a 2010 Fender American Special Jazz Bass in exceptional, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. This since-discontinued USA-made Jazz Bass model combines vintage tones and aesthetics with modern, player-friendly features including a Modern C neck profile carve with a satin finish, 9 1/2“ fretboard radius, medium jumbo fretwire, Vintage-Style single coil pickups, and Fender’s “Greasebucket” tone circuit.
The classic tonewood complement consists of an alder body and a maple neck, yielding a resonant acoustic platform. The Vintage-Style single coil pickups have plenty of sweet midrange and articulate growl, with a clear treble response and plenty of broad thump and muscular detail with the Tone knob rolled back. This bass weighs 9lbs 2oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 45-100 roundwound strings, easy-playing action, and spot-on intonation.
The maple neck has Fender’s “Modern C” shape, a slender carve with lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .790” deep at the 1st fret and .915” at the 12th. The fretboard has a modern 9 1/2“ radius, and the medium jumbo fretwire is nigh flawless. This bass plays cleanly up the 34” scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod, and the nut measures 1 1/2“ in width. The clover-button tuning machines function smoothly and reliably, and there is an extra cleanly doweled string retainer mounting hole on the headstock face.
All of the electronics function as intended, with a standard Volume/Volume/Tone control configuration (and with Fender's “Greasebucket” Tone circuit). The chrome-plated hardware has plenty of shine, and plastics include the three-ply pickguard and trio of knobs. Cosmetic wear on the gloss Black finish is limited to a number of light scratches in the clear coat on the body as a whole, some minor scuffing on the back lower bout body edge, and faint wear on the back that falls short of "buckle rash." The satin finish on the neck profile is immaculate.
