Clearly taking its cues from the mid '50s Les Paul Junior, this Tokai Love Rock has a rich and resonant natural acoustic quality that translates faithfully through the USA-made Seymour Duncan pickup. Metering at 9.55k ohms, the P-90 has a roaring, powerful sound with ample midrange growl and a glassy, dynamic treble character. The bass register is wooly and thick, and the aluminum Bigsby saddle helps ensure ideal articulation and focus. The one-piece African mahogany neck has a beefy '50s-style C profile carve with generous shoulder and a substantive feel, measuring .885” deep at the 1st fret and .945” at the 12th. The dark Indian rosewood fretboard features dot inlay and stock medium jumbo fretwire. The frets have their full factory height and good meat, showing only light wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-5 and playing cleanly in every register. Conforming to Gibson specs, the scale length is 24 3/4“, and the hand-carved bone nut measures 1 11/16“ in width. The “open book” headstock has a clean script "Tokai" logo, gold "Love Rock" script text, and set of locking Kluson-style tuners that look the part with round metal buttons and simulated aging.
On the body, the electronics work as they should, with the Seymour Duncan P-90 wired to Volume and Tone controls with knurled domed knobs. Hardware includes a Bigsby bridge with bowtie base, covering the cleanly doweled mounting holes for the original stopbar, paired with a genuine USA-made Bigsby B5 vibrato tailpiece. The Bigsby has a brushed finish and actuates easily for modest dives and expressive gestures. A custom cut aluminum pickguard rounds out the hardware. The rich Cherry gloss finish exhibits one small finish chip at the bass-side waist on top, a couple tiny nicks on the bass-side edge of the headstock veneer, and some light finish scratches and minor marks on the body as a whole consistent with light, careful use. The gloss on the neck profile is flawless.
