Up for sale, a 2008 Fender Mustang '69 vintage reissue, 100% original and in perfect working order. Made exclusively for the Japanese market and rarely seen outside its country of origin, this Mustang model (officially model MG69) is a testament to the workmanship and eye for detail evident in the Made in Japan Fender models.
There's plenty to love about this Mustang, from the lightweight and resonant slab body to the pair of stock single coil pickups that deliver plenty of snap and twang. The guitar is featherweight at 6lbs 15oz, and the crisp, clear voice of the instrument when strummed acoustically translates well through the pickups. Of course one of the most fun sounds on the Mustang is the out-of-phase setting, engaged when both on/off/on pickup selector switches are at their innermost or outermost points. The quack and spank of that particular setting is unique to the Mustang, and there's plenty of tonal range between the two pickups, with meatier sounds when the neck pickup is soloed. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this Mustang is strung with 10-46 strings and dialed in with spot-on intonation and slinky action.
The maple neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve at the nut, with full shoulders in every register and more overall heft and roundness as you travel up the fretboard, measuring .810" deep at the 1st fret and .925" at the 12th. The thick veneer rosewood fretboard boasts 22 stock slender frets which retain their full factory height and show only light wear beneath the plain strings on the crowns of frets 1-3. The scale length measures 24", and the neck is straight with a responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The bone nut measures 1 9/16" in width. The headstock features Kluson-style tuning machines which turn smoothly and hold pitch as they should. Above the four-bolt F heck plate, the Made in Japan text and T-prefix serial number are present.
All of the electronics function as intended, with Master Volume and Tone controls governing the two pickups. The plastic parts are near mint, with great dimension in the white pearloid pickguard, and the chrome-plated hardware is positively gleaming. The gloss three-tone Sunburst finish has various dings and a few small finish chips on the body perimeter, with some light finish scratches and tiny marks largely relegated to the back as well. The ambered gloss on the neck profile is flawless.
A well-padded vintage Japanese leather gigbag is included.
