Up for sale, a 2008 Fender Competition Mustang ‘73 vintage reissue model MG73-CO in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original gigbag. Produced exclusively for the Japanese domestic market and rarely seen outside of its country of origin, this “Crafted in Japan” Competition Mustang sports a custom color Fiesta Red finish complete with a matching headstock.
Tonewoods include a basswood body and maple neck capped by a rosewood fingerboard, and the instrument is featherweight at 6lbs 15oz. Acoustically, this guitar is quite resonant, with a crisp, clear chime and strong natural midrange response. These qualities are faithfully translated via the alnico magnet single coil pickup pair, offering plenty of tonal range between the two pickups, with meatier sounds when the neck pickup is singled out and sparkling cut with the bridge pickup favored. Of course, one of the most fun sounds on the Mustang is the out-of-phase setting, engaged when both on/off/on pickup selector switches are at their innermost or outermost points for a distinctive quack and spank. This Mustang has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 11-49 strings, slinky action, and spot-on intonation.
The maple neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve at the nut, with a gentle increase in overall heft further up the fretboard, measuring .820” deep at the 1st fret and .950” at the 12th. The rosewood fretboard has a vintage-spec 7 1/4” radius and slender frets which retain their full factory height and well-rounded crowns, showing just a touch of wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-3. At 24", the scale length is ideal for smaller hands and players looking to execute chord extensions that might be a bit more of a stretch at Fender's full scale, and the original bone nut measures 1 9/16" in width. On the headstock, the Kluson-style tuners with white buttons turn smoothly and hold accurate pitch. The “Crafted in Japan” text and S-prefix serial number are present above the four-bolt F neck plate.
All of the electronics function as intended, with Master Volume and Tone controls and a pair of three-way On/Off/On switches governing the pickup pair. The vibrato has an easy, effortless response, and the chrome hardware is bright and clean. The white pearloid pickguard exhibits faint yellowing, and the original pair of knobs round out the plastics.
The gloss Fiesta Red finish is accented by a racing stripe across the bass-side lower bout. Cosmetic wear is limited to a scant few faint finish scratches in the clear coat of the gloss on the body as a whole, and a handful of nicks on the instrument, largely concentrated on the lower bout on top. The neck profile retains its smooth ambered gloss, with some very minor, shallow marks on the bass-side shoulder behind frets 1-5 that have no impact on playability.
The original Fender-branded gigbag is included.
