Up for sale, a 2007 Gibson Custom Shop Historic 1958 Les Paul Standard "R8" in excellent condition and in perfect working order, upgraded with Gibson's CustomBucker PAFs and a premium wiring harness. Additional player-friendly features and aesthetic upgrades include a professional refret with jumbo fretwire, a hand-carved bone nut, and a more recent set of Gibson's Historic lightly dished amber bonnet knobs.
The CustomBuckers are Gibson's latest and most highly praised PAF iteration available exclusively in select Custom Shop models. Featuring Alnico III magnets, these low-medium output pickups have all the chirp, honk, and bloom you could want. The set in this particular guitar is dynamic, highly detailed, balanced, and comfortably versatile with any playing style. The bridge has plenty of bite and growl, while the neck pickup has the buttery girth and power one expects without sacrificing clarity. Demonstrative of what quality tonewoods are capable of, there are few things finer than the rich warmth of mahogany paired with a carved maple top that adds cut and attack. Weighing 9lbs 8oz and professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with fresh 10-46 strings, this Les Paul has solid intonation and slinky action.
The one-piece mahogany neck has a substantial C carve with very full shoulders, yet not as deep as some Custom Shop “baseball bat” necks, measuring .860" deep at the 1st fret and .999" at the 12th. The neck shape is truly more in the vein of Gibson's R9 carves, offering both substance and effortless playability. The rosewood fretboard is a dark, tight-grained cut, recently refretted with jumbo fretwire that has ample meat and crown, showing no wear. The 1 11/16" wide nut has been upgraded with a hand-carved piece of bone for optimal note clarity and sustain. On the headstock, the guitar retains the original Gibson Deluxe Kluson-style tuning machines with push-in bushings.
All of the electronics function as intended, and both upgraded CustomBucker humbuckers retain the small "Patent Applied For" stickers on the baseplates. The harness features tightly spec'd Bournes 500k pots and paper-in-oil K42Y tone caps. The requisite "R8" stamp is also present in the control cavity. The original hardware has its factory applied light muting of the sheen on the nickel plating, and the ambered bonnet knobs are post-2013 with the more vintage-correct molding and lightly dished tops seen after Gibson retooled their plastics on the Historic models.
The Cherry Sunburst nitro lacquer gloss finish has a hint of flame on the bass side of the top carve, and there is zero aniline dye bleed on either the top or neck binding. Cosmetic wear is limited to a few minor marks at the bass-side waist on the back, far shy of “buckle rash,” and a similar spot of tiny clustered marks just beyond the neck heel on the back. There are a few faint finish scratches and minor marks in the clear coat of the gloss on the body as a whole, mostly relegated to the perimeter, while the neck profile gloss is flawless.
The original Gibson Custom Shop hardshell case is included, along with the original manual.
