Up for sale, a 2007 Fender "Thin Skin" American Vintage '62 Telecaster Custom in near mint, 100% original condition, complete with the original COA, hangtags, and G&G hardshell case. A rare example available only for a few short years from three Fender dealers in exceedingly small quantities, the Thin Skin line boasted a bevy of rare custom color finishes (in this case Fiesta Red), 6105 fretwire, a modern 9 1/2" fretboard radius, and thin nitro lacquer finishes without the poly base coat seen on other American Vintage models. With a double bound alder body, maple neck, and slab rosewood fretboard, this classic tonewood combination is the perfect platform for the pair of original black bobbin single coil pickups. While the bridge is all sparkle and twang, the neck pickup has a richness and bell-like chime. With both pickups engaged, it's a "best of both worlds" scenario that's equal parts cut and warmth, ideal for rhythm work. The guitar is particularly resonant acoustically and lightweight at 7lbs 5oz. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar and freshly restrung with 10-46 strings, this guitar is dialed in for optimal intonation and action.
The maple neck has a modestly slender C profile carve with round, inviting shoulders and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .825" deep at the 1st fret and .915" at the 12th. The 6105 factory fretwire has vintage width with appreciably more height and crown, and the frets retain their full factory height, showing only light wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-3, with just a hint of wear on the crowns extending to fret 7. The guitar plays well up the 25 1/2" scale with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. and the nut measures 1.650" in width. On the headstock, the original Kluson-style tuners and Fender "Telecaster Custom" decal are present and flawless. The neck heel and pocket both have 2007 date stamps, and the neck plate has an SE-prefix serial number denoting this limited run, Special Edition model.
All of the electronics work as they should, with the pair of original black bobbin alnico magnet pickups coupled to Master Volume and Tone controls with untouched solder and CTS pots that date to 2007. The chrome-plated hardware shines like new, and plastics include a mint green pickguard and top hat switch tip. As the Thin Skin finishes have a proclivity to wear easily, the stunning condition of this example is all the more remarkable, with just a couple microscopic marks and a few exceedingly faint finish scratches in the clear coat of the gloss on the body as a whole. The clear nitro gloss on the neck profile is flawless.
This discontinued "Thin Skin" model rarely comes up for sale, and this Fiesta Red double bound example truly sounds as good as it looks.
The guitar comes complete with the original brown tolex G&G hardshell case, COA, and hangtags.
